Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail plate, nail bed, or both, which is also called fungal nail infection or tinea unguium.
Symptoms include discoloration (often white or yellow), thickening, and crumbling or brittle nails that may become deformed and detach from the nail bed.
It can affect both fingernails and toenails, but is more common in toenails, and is often treated with oral or topical antifungal medications, though other treatments like laser therapy are also options.
