But the reality in the Philippines today is alarming:
๐Ÿ“ˆ HIV cases have surged by 550%, reaching 252,800 cases in 2025 (WHO).
๐Ÿ‘ง The Philippine Statistics Authority recorded 3,343 births among girls aged 10โ€“14 just last year with 99% of these children fathered by significantly older men.

These numbers highlight the urgent need for s*xual health education. Through awareness and open dialogue, we can take action:

โœ… Regular STI testing
โœ… Vaccination
โœ… Safe contraception use
โœ… Advocacy for comprehensive s*x education

Last week, during Medweek 2025, Project Prism had the privilege of sharing s*xual health education with students of West Visayas State University, one step closer to building a healthier, more informed community.

Let break the stigma. Let's talk about it. Let's act!

On this day, September 26, 2025, we observe World Contraception Day. It is important to highlight how access to effective contraception protects the health of mothers and children, empowers women socially and economically, and supports stronger families.

In the Philippines, women with unmet need for contraception commonly point to health concerns and fear of side effects, a belief that they are unlikely to become pregnant due to infrequent s*x, lactational amenorrhea, or reduced fertility, and the cost of contraceptives. Among single, s*xually experienced women, nonuse is also linked to similar reasons. Additional factors include personal or religious opposition to family planning and, for some, opposition from partners or family members, which is more often reported by poorer women.

This highlights that access to contraception is shaped by health concerns, perceived low pregnancy risk, cost, and social or cultural opposition, underscoring the need for comprehensive reproductive health programs. Thus, strengthening education, affordability, and community support can help ensure that women and families fully benefit from contraceptive use.

Bi Visibility Day, first marked in 1999, celebrates bis*xual and biromantic identities while raising awareness of the unique challenges bis*xual people face. Visibility is vital because bis*xual people often experience bi erasure and biphobia both outside and within the LGBTQ+ community. By celebrating bis*xuality, we affirm that all identities are valid and encourage individuals to embrace themselves without shame or fear.

Bi erasure happens when bis*xuality is dismissed or stereotyped as โ€œjust a phase,โ€ or when bis*xual people are assumed to be either gay or straight. For example, bis*xual women are often stereotyped as actually straight, while bis*xual men are stereotyped as actually gay, erasing bis*xuality altogether.

Recognizing and challenging these harmful assumptions helps create a more inclusive and supportive society. By standing in solidarity and celebrating bis*xuality, we move closer to a world where everyone can live openly, authentically, and with pride.

The activity served as an avenue to emphasize the vital role of family planning (FP) in achieving healthier, more functional families and in promoting overall community well-being. Students and participants were engaged in discussions that underscored the importance of accessibility and awareness of FP services, empowering them to make informed and responsible decisions regarding reproductive health.

As part of the campaign, various family planning methods were introduced, highlighting both natural and artificial approaches. Special attention was given to barrier methods, particularly the use of condoms, which remain among the most affordable and widely accessible FP options. The use of latex condoms not only prevent unintended or early pregnancies, but also reduce the risk of acquiring s*xually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.

By combining education with the free distribution of condoms, the initiative aimed to break misconceptions, reduce stigma, and encourage proactive participation in reproductive health programs. In doing so, the Prism Project and Project Kaalam continue to uphold their shared commitment to empowering the youth with knowledge, protecting their health, and fostering responsible decision-making for a better future.

ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR EQUALITY IN ILOILO CITY ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’ซ

Mayor Raisa Treรฑas has established the Office of the LGBTQ+ Affairs through Executive Order No. 046, Series of 2025 to strengthen the cityโ€™s policies on inclusion and the protection of LGBTQ+ rights.

This office will be responsible for implementing programs, policies, and initiatives that promote the dignity, safety, and rights of the LGBTQI+ sector, aligned with national and local policies like the Safe Spaces Act, and Iloilo Cityโ€™s Anti-Discrimination Ordinance, passed in June 2018.

With no national anti-discrimination law, local policies like this play a big role in ensuring that LGBTQI+ Filipinos are protected.

Last July 24, 2025, the Prism Project successfully held an educational lecture on HIV awareness among adolescent students of Domingo Lacson National High School, Bacolod City. Around 80 youth participants took part in this advocacy to broaden their knowledge on s*xual health and prevent the spread of misinformation and stigma against HIV.

The PRISM Projectโ€™s advocacy on HIV awareness highlights the urgent need for comprehensive s*xual health education among the youth in hopes of addressing the rising number of HIV cases. We are deeply grateful to all of our stakeholders and partners for helping us achieve this goal. Together, we continue to create communities that are healthier and better informed.

Last July 26, 2025, the PRISM Project brought its advocacy to San Carlos City, Negros Occidental through a meaningful lecture on SOGIESC and HIV/AIDS Awareness, empowering 50 participants, including barangay officials, barangay healthworkers, and youth leaders with knowledge on gender inclusivity, s*xual health, and the fight against stigma.

In collaboration with Amlig Negros, the event also offered free and confidential HIV testing, championing the importance of early detection and proactive health care.

Together, we move forwardโ€”educating, empowering, and embracing diversity. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ๐ŸŒˆ
