Bilang tugon sa trahedyang paglubog ng M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 sa karagatan malapit sa Baluk-Baluk Island, Basilan, ang Basilan Medical Center (BasMC) ay agarang nagbigay ng serbisyong medikal sa mga pasaherong nailigtas at dumaong sa pantalan ng Lungsod ng Isabela.

May kabuuang dalawampu’t apat (24) na pasyente isinugod sa Basilan Medical Center para sa karagdagang medikal na pagsusuri, obserbasyon, at gamutan. Ang mga pasyente ay kasalukuyang nasa ilalim ng pangangalaga ng mga doktor, nars, at iba pang health professionals ng ospital.

Patuloy na nakikipag-ugnayan ang Basilan Medical Center sa mga kaukulang ahensya upang masiguro ang maayos na pagbibigay ng serbisyong pangkalusugan at ang kaligtasan ng mga apektado ng naturang insidente.

On January 22, 2026, the DOH ZPCHD – Health Facility Development Unit conducted an on-site revalidation at Basilan Medical Center and the outcomes reflect the hospital’s strong commitment to quality, safety, and people-centered care.

BasMC achieved the following validated ratings:
✔ 100% – Integrated Hospital Operations & Management Program (IHOMP) SAT
✔ 93.45% (4- Green Star Rating) – Green Viability Assessment (GVA) Tool
✔ 97.78% – Infection Prevention and Control Assessment Tool (IPCAT)
✔ 87% – Health Care Waste Management (HCWM) Score Card Tool

The revalidation also covered key operational and service delivery tools, including the Hospital Development Plan (HDP), Zero Balance Billing (ZBB), and Integrated People-Centered Health Services (IPCHS)—further affirming BasMC’s adherence to national standards.

During the assessment, the team commended BasMC’s good practices, including the presence of a crusher for empty vials, pyrolysis technology converting infectious and general waste into ash, a functional Sewage Treatment Plant for proper wastewater treatment, and a rainwater collection system linked to the Fire Detection and Alarm System (FDAS) for emergency fire protection.

The Philippine Heart Association (PHA) – Zamboanga Peninsula Chapter conducted an official engagement with Basilan Medical Center (BasMC) to further strengthen regional efforts in cardiovascular care and emergency preparedness, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged communities where access to advanced care remains limited.

The engagement commenced with an Induction Ceremony and Oath Taking of BasMC doctors as PHA Subchapter Associate Members, marking a significant milestone in fostering professional collaboration and deeper integration of Basilan into the ZAMBASULTA health network. The inducted physicians were:

• Dr. Ernesto F. Sanson
• Dr. Adelfa S. Tahil
• Dr. Jarrhuma P. Kanni

Following this milestone activity, the PHA conducted a 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬-𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐏𝐑 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 on January 14, 2026, at Claret College of Isabela, in collaboration with the BasMC Health Emergency Management Staff (HEMS) and the Professional Education Training and Research Unit (PETRU). The activity brought together approximately 600 participants from various frontline sectors, including City Health Office of Isabela (Barangay Health Workers), teachers from the Department of Education (DepEd), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Isabela City, Isabela City Police, and BasMC staff, all equipped with essential life-saving skills to respond during cardiac emergencies.

The activity was graced by the presence of Board Member, District II, Dr. Nur Khan Istarul, who delivered a timely and meaningful message, emphasizing that cardiac emergencies in Basilan are often a “race against time", and that CPR knowledge can spell the difference between life and death. He underscored that in emergencies, inaction is the greatest mistake, reminding participants that CPR is not about perfection, but about being prepared and compassionate.

This initiative was made possible through the full support of Medical Center Chief II, Dr. Sitti Nurussamsi C. Amilasan, MD, MPH, whose leadership continues to champion capacity-building efforts that enhance patient safety, community resilience, and equitable access to life-saving care.

Earlier today, Basilan Medical Center welcomed the Department of Health – Zamboanga Peninsula Center for Health Development (DOH ZP-CHD) during their monitoring visit to assess the hospital’s preparedness in managing Fire Work-Related Injuries (FWRI) in line with the Ligtas Christmas 2025 campaign.

The visit aimed to ensure that Basilan Medical Center is fully equipped and ready to respond to potential FWRI cases during the holiday season. The DOH ZP-CHD team conducted an inspection of designated treatment areas and evaluated the availability of trained personnel, essential equipment, and critical resources to guarantee timely and quality emergency care.

This activity highlights the shared commitment of DOH ZP-CHD and Basilan Medical Center to patient safety, disaster readiness, and the continuous strengthening of healthcare services, especially during high-risk periods such as the holidays.

This initiative was made even more significant through the unwavering support of our Medical Center Chief II, Dr. Sitti Nurussamsi C. Amilasan, MD, MPH, whose leadership continues to inspire programs that promote empathy, solidarity, and patient-centered care.

The celebration was a sincere expression of gratitude for the dedication, resilience, and tireless service of every BasMC employee throughout the year. The program also honored long-serving personnel through the Loyalty Awards and recognized our stakeholders for their continued support and partnership in advancing the hospital’s mission.

The night was made more vibrant with division-based TikTok performances that showcased creativity and teamwork, while the much-awaited Raffle Draw added excitement and laughter, making the celebration truly memorable.

Basilan Medical Center successfully conducted its Earthquake & Fire Drill 2025, a full-scale emergency preparedness simulation led by the HEMS Department headed by Mr. Albert A. De Los Reyes, AO-IV/DRRMH Manager and BAsMC PETRU.

The activity opened with an Emergency Preparedness Program, featuring vital lectures from BFP Isabela City, BFP Lamitan City, and the BAsMC Emergency Responder Team. These sessions equipped participants with essential knowledge on evacuation procedures, fire response, patient handling, and the critical Drop, Cover, and Hold On protocol.

Following the lectures, a real-life simulation drill was carried out—testing the hospital’s readiness in a high-pressure scenario. Stakeholders reenacted actual emergency conditions, demonstrating how responders evacuate patients, suppress fires, secure perimeters, provide first aid, and transport victims safely.

The drill drew strong participation and seamless coordination among our valued stakeholders:
• BFP Isabela City & BFP Lamitan City
• 52nd & 53rd Special Action Company
• 18th Infantry Battalion
• Regional Mobile Force Battalion
• Philippine Coast Guard – Isabela City
• Visitors, observers, and the entire BAsMC workforce
