Hereโs a current summary of the minimum standard requirements to become a blood donor

Basic Eligibility
Age: 18 to 65 years old is the typical range. (Individuals 16โ17 may donate with parental/guardian consent (valid ID).
Weight: Must weigh at least 50 kg (110 lbs).
General Health
1. In good general health with no current infections, fever, cold/flu, etc.
2. Normal blood pressure and pulse (screened at blood bank).
3. Not pregnant
4. Not menstruating
Food, Sleep, Alcohol & Smoking
1. Eat a well-balanced meal before donating.
2. Get adequate sleep (often 5โ6+ hours before donation).
3. No alcohol within at least 24 hours before donation.
Smoking should be avoided for a few hours before donation.
๐งช Medical & Screening Requirements
Hemoglobin levels must be within acceptable limits (often checked at screening).
Screening includes physical exam, blood pressure, and tests for transmissible infections (e.g., HIV, hepatitis B/C, syphilis, malaria).
๐ซ Who Cannot Donate (Deferrals)
Recent illness or infection recovery.
Recent major surgery or dental procedure (varies by facility).
Recent tattoo or body piercing (often a 12-month wait if not done in licensed/proper facility).
๐ Donation Intervals
Usually every 4 months for males and every 6 months for females.
Platelet or apheresis donations have different intervals.
๐ก Notes / Clarifications
Smokers and occasional drinkers can donate as long as they meet other health criteria and follow pre-donation guidelines (no smoking or drinking just before donation).
Frequent health screenings and strict checks help protect both donor and recipient safety.
