What are the new regulations for dense breasts?

New FDA regulations effective September 2024 make changes to the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and require facilities to inform patients that dense tissue makes it harder to find cancer on a mammogram and also raises the risk of developing breast cancer. Women must be told if their breasts are not dense or dense. If dense, the patient will also be told that ‘in some people with dense tissue, other imaging tests in addition to a mammogram may help find cancers.

European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) guidelines suggest that supplemental screening is recommended for women aged 50-70 with extremely dense breasts with MRI every 4 years in women, preferably every 2-3 years. When MRI is unavailable, ultrasound in combination with mammography may be used as an alternative.6
