What does the "NO APPROVED THERAPEUTIC CLAIM" label mean?
"We live in an age when people are so busy trying to sell us on food supplements that we are subtly led to believe that they are medicine substitutes. A word of caution, they are not. So here is an explanation of why they must contain the statement "No Approved Therapeutic Claims."
Medicines are FDA Approved
For a pill or tablet to call itself medicine, it must go through rigorous testing by the Food and Drug Administration. It is a long process that can take years to complete, and in the end, it might not even be labeled as safe for human consumption, and it might not even enter the market.
Even before it goes to the FDA, a drug is usually in research and development for a very long time with a lot of money invested in it.
Food Supplements are Also Regulated
The truth is food supplements are also regulated somewhat. But aside from ‘No Approved Therapeutic Claims", they might also carry the label "Statements have not been evaluated by the FDA" when you see such a statement then the thing you are looking at might as well claim to cure cancer. They can say anything, and it is based on the reputation of the company if you want to believe it or not.
Again, food supplements can make any statements they want. It is up to you to decide if you want to believe the claims or not.
Approved Claims vs. No Approved Claims
Again, this is the crux of this article; medicine needs to be evaluated by the FDA before it can say that it relieves pain for instance. By comparison, a food supplement can make any claim it wants, but it has not been evaluated by the government regulators who are trained to substantiate or falsify these claims.
That being said, food supplements try to be honest and will usually test their product before they make the claims they are making. After all, the claims don't add up when they are not likely to find themselves with customers."
