SEP 16, 2025. 5 SIMPLE STEPS TO CALM YOUR MIND
Dr. Marc Brackett, developer of the RULER method: “If you don’t know what you’re feeling, it’s hard to know what to do with your feelings.”
Developed at Yale's Center for Emotional Intelligence, the RULER method is an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning that teaches five key emotional intelligence skills:
- Recognize: Notice how you’re feeling.
- Understand: Figure out what’s causing it.
- Label: Name the emotion.
- Express: Share or write about it, or do something healthy to express it.
- Regulate: Do something that helps you calm down (like walking, breathing, talking to someone, or being in nature).
Feeling your feelings and knowing how to chill out actually helps you feel less alone, live longer, and just enjoy life more. Also, finding your own unique way to stay calm is totally okay, even if that’s hanging out in a grocery store aisle! Using these steps regularly can help you feel better and handle stress more easily.
