What an amazing discovery!

The 1936 Filipino film “Diwata ng Karagatan” directed by Carlos Vander Tolosa, produced by Jose Nepomuceno has been found in the Royal Belgian Film Archive.

We celebrate this moment not only as a triumph for the Philippine film industry but also as a testament to the deep cultural connections between Belgium and the Philippines.

This discovery reminds us how shared heritage and collaboration across nations can help preserve art, history and identity for future generations.

A HISTORIC FIND!

The 1936 film 'Diwata ng Karagatan,' directed by Carlos Vander Tolosa, produced by Jose Nepomuceno, and starring Rogelio de la Rosa and Mari Veles, was found in the Royal Belgian Film Archive. This makes it the oldest surviving Filipino feature, taking a title previously held by 1937 film 'Zamboanga.'

The South sea romance is one of only a few features recovered from the pre-World War II era of Filipino cinema, making this a historic discovery. Filipino historian and documentarian Nick Deocampo confirmed the existence of the film.
