SALISBURY — With her smile and personal testimony, Marlene Stephenson is like a walking advertisement for the Missions of Mercy dental clinic, which will be coming back to Salisbury March 6-7, 2015.

“You feel awkward about this, it’s embarrassing sometimes,” Stephenson said, “but in this case, they made us feel so comfortable.”

In late September 2013, Stephenson and her husband, Paul, were among more than 800 people who came to the free, two-day dental clinic at Catawba College.

The clinics, held periodically throughout the state, are an outreach program of the N.C. Dental Society, but it’s up to each community to raise the money; schedule all the dentists, hygienists and dental assistants; and organize the volunteers and feed them.

MORELAND children from migrant backgrounds have barriers to accessing mainstream dental services and oral health information, new research has found.

But thanks to Teeth Tales, an oral health project for children, those barriers are being broken down.

Merri Community Health Services population health unit manager Maryanne Tadic said developing alternative options for children from migrant families was important.

Hundreds of dentists, plus countless oral health professionals and volunteers from around the state, gathered inside Santa Ana Star Center this weekend for the “Mission of Mercy,” taking care of people seeking free dental care.

Michael Moxey, communications director for the New Mexico Dental Association, said he saw about 300 people waiting to get inside the Star Center doors when he arrived at about 5 a.m. Friday. Some had camped overnight.

“The goal is to see 2,000 (patients),” Moxey said, which would come close to the estimated 2,200 people tended to at the inaugural Mission of Mercy, held in Albuquerque in 2010. Other missions have been held in Las Cruces (in 2012) and Farmington (2013), he said.

In a Wrentham dental office, Kayla Bessette leaned back in a patient chair as hygienist Patty Pezold leaned forward to scrape her teeth. Bessette’s body appeared relaxed, but there was tension in her face as she extended her hand and pulled back her lower lip for Pezold’s pick.

“Kayla has really strong lip muscles, so she likes to help me,” Pezold explained. “Sometimes when you’re nervous, it makes that muscle really tight.”

The study, published in the British Dental Journal, examined 303 skulls from a Romano-British burial ground in Poundbury, Dorset for evidence of dental disease. Only 5% of skulls displayed signs of moderate to severe gum disease, compared to today’s population of approximately 15-30% of adults suffering from chronic progressive periodontitis.

However, lots of the Roman skulls, which form part of the collections in the Palaeontology department of the Natural History Museum, displayed evidence of infections and abscesses, and half had caries (tooth decay). The Pundbury population also showed extensive tooth wear from a young age, as is to be expected from a diet containing a large amount of rich grains and cereals at the time.

Gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is the result of chronic inflammatory response to the build-up of dental plaque.

A study of 303 skulls held at the Natural History Museum, dating from the years 200 to 400 AD, found that only five percent showed signs of moderate to severe gum disease (periodontitis), compared to around 15 to 30 percent of adults nowadays.

The eight-page study, led by a periodontist from King's College London (KCL) university, was published in the British Dental Journal on Friday.

While much of the population nowadays lives with mild gum disease, factors such as to***co smoking or medical conditions like diabetes can trigger more severe chronic periodontitis, which can lead to the loss of teeth, the study said.

Britons had far less gum disease in the Roman era than today, and oral health has seriously worsened despite the advent of toothbrushes and dentists, a study said Friday.
