𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💊

Ethambutol is an oral antibiotic mainly used to treat tuberculosis (TB), a serious bacterial infection that usually affects the lungs. It belongs to a group of medicines called antimycobacterial drugs and is commonly used together with other TB medications such as isoniazid, rifampicin, and pyrazinamide. Ethambutol helps control the infection by stopping the growth of the bacteria that cause tuberculosis, making it an important part of combination therapy for TB treatment.

It works by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall, which is essential for the survival of tuberculosis bacteria. It blocks enzymes called 𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙣𝙤𝙨𝙮𝙡𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙨, preventing the production of important cell wall components such as arabinogalactan. Without a properly formed cell wall, the bacteria cannot grow or multiply effectively, which helps slow down the spread of infection and allows the body’s immune system and other medications to eliminate the bacteria.

Taking ethambutol may cause some side effects. Common effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, headache, or dizziness. Some individuals may also experience joint pain or mild confusion. A more serious but uncommon side effect is vision problems, such as blurred vision or difficulty distinguishing red and green colors, due to irritation of the optic nerve. Because of this risk, regular eye check-ups are recommended during treatment. If sudden changes in vision or severe symptoms occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💊

Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of vitamin B12 widely used in nutritional supplements and fortified foods to prevent or treat vitamin B12 deficiency. The name Cyanocobalamin comes from its chemical structure, which contains a cyanide ligand (-CN) bound to a center Cobalt (Co) atom within the corrin ring. It can be administered orally or through injection to treat the deficiency. Oral supplements are commonly used for individuals with mild deficiency or for general nutritional support. However, in cases where absorption is impaired, Cyanocobalamin is given through injections bypassing the digestive system and directly into the bloodstream, ensuring effective delivery.

Cyanocobalamin in the bloodstream is absorbed into cells with the help of specific B12 binding or carrier proteins. Inside the cell, it is converted into its active coenzyme forms (ex. Methylcobalamin and Adenosylcobalamin) which are essential in maintaining proper cellular function such as cell growth and reproduction, supports metabolic pathways, and the synthesis of macromolecules. The body regulates vitamin B12 by storing a portion in the liver, and excess is removed via the kidneys and eventually excreted in the urine due to its high water solubility.

Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur when the body does not obtain enough vitamin B12, leading to impaired biological function. It is commonly caused by poor dietary intake or malabsorption due to an existing disorder. If left untreated, prolonged deficiency may result in neurological disorders and may progress to conditions such as Pernicious Anemia, which is an autoimmune disorder causing the body to lack intrinsic factors. Vitamin B12 deficiency can be diagnosed through blood tests, particularly through complete blood count (CBC).

Early detection is always the key! 😎

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲! 🩸💊

Acetylsalicylic acid, also known as aspirin, is still the most commonly used medication in the world and is considered one of the most important pharmacological discoveries of the 20th century. Although Felix Hoffmann refined its present synthesis in 1897, its origins date back thousands of years, making it a pivotal point in the development of medicine. In addition to its well-known ability to reduce pain, headaches, fever, and inflammation, it is an essential component of cardiovascular health. It is commonly used to prevent blood clots and lower the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) by inhibiting platelet aggregation.

Aspirin is essential for cardiovascular health since it lowers the risk of heart-related problems, which goes beyond just relieving pain. By acting as a strong inhibitor of platelet aggregation, it keeps harmful blood clots from forming, which can result in myocardial infarction, or heart attacks. Aspirin is non-selective for COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes at the molecular level. Aspirin must be used carefully despite its long history and extensive usage because it inhibits these enzymes, which prevent the formation of prostaglandins, the lipids that indicate pain, and thromboxane A2, a major inducer of platelet clumping. Side effects like nausea, allergic reactions, hearing loss, and increased bleeding are known to occur. Most significantly, because of the possibility of severe consequences or poisoning, it should be given with great caution, especially to youngsters. However, when taken as directed, aspirin continues to be a vital component of contemporary medicine, bridging the gap between sophisticated cardiovascular prophylaxis and traditional herbal medicines.

Rabies is 100% fatal but 100% preventable.

𝐗𝐏𝐑𝐓 𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐘𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐄𝐒 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 joins the health community in raising awareness about rabies, a fatal viral disease that remains a serious public health concern in the Philippines. 𝗥𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗲𝘀 is commonly transmitted through the bite, scratch, or saliva of infected animals, with dogs accounting for the majority of human cases. While rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, it is entirely preventable through responsible pet ownership, regular vaccination of dogs, avoidance of stray or unfamiliar animals, and immediate medical care after potential exposure.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤 𝙞𝙛 𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙧 𝙨𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙙:
1. Immediately wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.
2. Apply an antiseptic, if available.
3. Do not self-medicate.
4. Proceed to the nearest Animal Bite Treatment Center (ABTC) as soon as possible.

𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥:
The Department of Health (DOH) provides free and accessible services through Animal Bite Treatment Centers nationwide. A list of public ABTCs can be found at:
https://rabies.doh.gov.ph/index.php/rabies-facilities/public-animal-bite-treatment-centers

By choosing to vaccinate our pets, avoiding contact with stray or unfamiliar animals, sharing accurate information, and responding quickly to potential exposures, we play a vital role in breaking the cycle of rabies transmission. Let us work together to protect lives and move closer to a rabies-free Philippines, where no one has to suffer from a disease that is entirely preventable. 🐕💉

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲! 🫁💊

Ipratropium Bromide is a medication used to minimize and treat symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. It is taken by inhalation as an anticholinergic bronchodilator to provide localized relief in the airways without being absorbed throughout the body. By inhibiting the M1 and M3 subtypes of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, it functions as an antagonist. This drug successfully inhibits the cholinergic stimulation that causes bronchoconstriction since acetylcholine typically instructs smooth muscles to contract.

In addition to clearing the airways, this treatment works well to reduce symptoms including excessive sputum production and chronic coughing. Although the mechanism of action is quick, it's important to remember that long-term use, especially after an acute asthma attack, hasn't been shown to provide any real benefits. Potential adverse effects, such as murky urine, frequent urination, shortness of breath, and bladder pain, should also be kept in mind by patients. It is still essential for long-term respiratory maintenance since it addresses the root cause of lung muscle tightness.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💊

Esomeprazole is an oral medication used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and for prevention of stomach ulcers caused by long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Esomeprazole helps relieve symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough, and promotes healing of acid-related damage in the stomach and esophagus. It may also be used in combination with antibiotics to treat 𝐻𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑦𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑖 infection under medical supervision.

It works by blocking the enzyme system known as the gastric proton pump (H⁺/K⁺-ATPase) located in the stomach lining. This enzyme is responsible for the final step in the production of gastric acid. By inhibiting this pump, esomeprazole significantly reduces acid secretion, allowing irritated tissues in the esophagus and stomach to heal. As the S-isomer of omeprazole, esomeprazole provides prolonged acid suppression, helping control symptoms and prevent complications related to excessive stomach acid.

Taking esomeprazole may cause some side effects, especially with long-term use. Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, constipation, dry mouth, or gas. Some individuals may also experience dizziness or mild skin reactions. Less commonly, serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions, kidney problems, low magnesium levels, vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures, or severe diarrhea caused by infection may occur. If symptoms such as chest pain, severe stomach pain, persistent diarrhea, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, or signs of an allergic reaction develop, immediate medical attention should be sought.

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💊💉

The main trigger for the body's "fight or flight" reaction is epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, which is a naturally occurring hormone and neurotransmitter. This chemical messenger, which was first discovered in the late 1800s by Oliver and Schäfer's research, is secreted by the adrenal medulla and is essential for controlling mood, heart rate, and metabolism. It serves as a link between psychological moods and urgent bodily needs in the central nervous system.

Nonetheless, the delicate balance of natural epinephrine is essential; persistently low levels are frequently associated with mental and physical health issues, such as sleep problems, hypoglycemia, and ongoing anxiety.

Synthetic epinephrine mimics the sympathetic nervous system in clinical situations by acting as a potent sympathomimetic medication that selectively targets alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. Because it relaxes the bronchi's smooth muscles to restore breathing and causes vasoconstriction to counteract low blood pressure, it is the gold standard for treating anaphylaxis.

Although its potency necessitates close medical management, it acts as a life-saving histamine antagonist during severe allergic responses or asthma crises. It should only be used in emergency situations or for certain prescriptions since it causes a quick systemic change and might produce serious adverse effects like tremors, heart palpitations, or hypertension.

Levodropropizine is a peripheral-targeting non-opioid used to treat coughs ranging from acute to chronic in both adults and children. It works by inhibiting activation of the sensory C-fiber within the tracheal nerves, decreasing both the intensity and the frequency of the coughs without any significant side effects focused on the central nervous system.

However, adverse reactions may still occur such as: dizziness, headaches, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, heartburn, and fatigue.

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲! 🫀💊

Amiodarone is a potent Class III anti-arrhythmic agent primarily indicated for the management of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias, such as ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, which disrupt the heart's ability to pump blood effectively. Being a derivative of benzofuran, it works by obstructing potassium channels in the cardiac cycle's third phase. By extending the action potential's duration, this function successfully stabilizes the electrical activity of the heart and delays the beginning of irregular rhythms. Beyond its electrical characteristics, amiodarone can inhibit T3 receptors because of a special chemical resemblance to thyroid hormones. By simulating a hypothyroid condition, this interaction can reduce cardiac metabolism and add another level of rhythm control.

However, because of its wide range of drug-drug interactions, amiodarone's clinical benefits come with a high level of care. Patients must reveal all of their medications, including those that may require quick dosage modifications or alternative therapies to prevent adverse reactions, such as Atazanavir, Bepridil, Cisapride, and Colchicine. Additionally, due to its distinct metabolic pathway, patients need to be closely watched for adverse effects such as coughing, lightheadedness, or uncontrollable bodily movements. A comprehensive medical history that focuses on thyroid, lung, and liver function is necessary before starting treatment in order to assure patient safety because pre-existing problems in these areas can greatly raise the risk of catastrophic consequences.
