The WHO and CDC have recommended the use of disposable face masks in order to prevent the spread of the COVID-19. Our authorities have implemented strict enforcement of the use of face masks and face shields to the public. According to the study done by Rume and Islam, there is a significant global increase of medical waste generation since the outbreak of COVID-19. Majority of these medical waste generated such as N-95 masks, medical face masks, protective suits, and gloves have plastics on them, usually Polypropylene and Tyvek. These plastics can persist in the environment for a long time and release dioxin and toxic elements that are harmful to nature and as well to most living organisms (Singh et al., 2020). Although proper waste disposal and management can limit the harmful effects of these plastics in our environment, many parts of our country still encounter many challenges in dealing with these medical wastes. Thus, some medical wastes end up in our environment especially in the bodies of water. Microplastics then emerge from these medical wastes, and when microplastics get into food like fish for human consumption, it becomes a serious concern about food safety (Fadare et al., 2020).
