Skin cancer affects people of all ages, genders, and skin tone and these silent threats to the skin manifests in various forms, each with its own characteristics and risks.

Here are the most common types of Skin cancer:
1. Basal Cell- appears as a pearly bump usually found on sun-exposed areas. Slow-growing and rarely spreads but early detection is essential to avoid complications.

2. Melanoma- aggressive type, contains melanocytes, a cell responsible for skin pigmentation, can quickly spread to other parts if left untreated.

3. Squamous Cell carcinoma- arising from prolonged exposure to UV. Scaly, red patch, or persistent sore signaling a potential danger beneath the surface. Less aggressive BUT can spread if ignored.

If moisturizing isn’t part of your daily routine yet, now’s the perfect time to start! Factors like sun damage, smoking, cosmetics, cold weather, and even frequent lip licking can all contribute to dry, irritated lips.

Here are a few simple tips to treat and prevent chapped lips:

1 Choose non-irritating lip products.
Look for “fragrance-free” and “hypoallergenic” on the label. If it stings, burns, or tingles — stop using it.

2️Apply lip balm throughout the day and before bed.
Opt for thick ointments like petroleum jelly to lock in moisture.

3️Protect your lips outdoors.
Use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher. Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and reapply every 2 hours when outside.

4️Keep your skin hydrated.
Drink water regularly and use a humidifier at home, especially while you sleep.

5️Avoid licking, biting, or picking at your lips.
These habits make dryness worse. Reapply balm instead.

6️Avoid placing metal items near or on your lips.
Things like paper clips, jewelry, or reusable metal straws can irritate delicate skin.

💡 A favorite among our patients is Cicalfate Restorative Lip Cream — gentle enough for infants, kids, and adults. With sucralfate, zinc, glycerin, and thermal spring water, it helps soothe, repair, and protect irritated lips. Available in the clinic.

While chapped lips are usually harmless, persistent symptoms may be a sign of something more. If dryness doesn’t improve, don’t hesitate to consult a board-certified dermatologist.
