BREAKING: Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Beverly Ho confirmed the first case of monkeypox in the Philippines in a press conference on Friday.

According to Ho, the first case is a 31-year-old Filipino who arrived from abroad on July 19, 2022. The patient has been discharged and is undergoing strict isolation and monitoring.

There are 10 identified close contacts with the first case, and three of them are in the same household, Ho said. The DOH undersecretary also said that these people have been advised to quarantine.

DOH also told the public that the close contacts of the first case are not showing any symptoms as of the moment.

The cases of the monkeypox virus have been rising in other countries since May 2022.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the symptoms of monkeypox include rash with blisters on the face, fever, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, muscle and back aches, and low energy.

DOH previously said that it had prepared a global standard response mechanism for the monkeypox virus following the WHO’s highest alarm on the global virus outbreak.
