🏃♀️A 29 year old runner came in with dull, aching pain on both calves during and after her runs, plus a history of shin splints.
Upon postural assessment, we also noted she’s flat-footed.
In her pre-treatment video, you’ll notice she’s over-pronating on left foot, which forces her foot to out-toe to compensate. This faulty pattern increases the workload on her calves leading to irritation and pain.
What we did:
After manual therapy (dry needling, MFR, and calf stretching), we focused on strengthening the structures responsible for arch control, stability, and proper foot mechanics.
1. Toe curls – Strengthens the intrinsic foot muscles that support the medial arch, helping reduce excessive pronation.
2. Heel raises with a ball between the malleoli – Activates the tibialis posterior to improve arch support and promote proper supination during push-off.
3. Single-leg deadlift with tripod stance – Reinforces equal weight-bearing (heel, big toe, pinky toe) while strengthening the gluteus medius/minimus for hip stability.
4. Single-leg deadlift with band-induced pronation – Challenges the arch muscles to resist pronation and builds dynamic supination strength during movement.
Post-treatment:
In her post-treatment video, you’ll notice her left over-pronation and out-toeing are significantly improved.
Continuous strengthening is still required to fully correct the pattern and prevent symptoms from coming back.
