Panunuluyan is a traditional Filipino Christmas reenactment that tells the story of Mary and Joseph searching for a place to stay on the night before Jesus was born. As they go from house to house, they are turned away, until they finally find shelter. The song-filled journey reflects faith, patience, and hope while preparing the community for the joy of Christmas.
Panunuluyan traces its roots to Spanish-era Philippines, influenced by Catholic traditions brought by the Spaniards. Over time, Filipinos adapted it into a unique local practice, usually performed on Christmas Eve before the Midnight Mass (Misa de Gallo).
Panunuluyan teaches hospitality, compassion, and humility. It reminds people to welcome Christ not only in celebrations but also in daily lifeโespecially by opening our hearts to the poor, the stranger, and those in need.
