What are the 4 types of drugs?
Drugs and alcohol generally fall into 4 categories: depressants, stimulants, op**tes, and hallucinogen.
> Depressants, or "downers," are psychoactive drugs that decrease central nervous system activity, reducing brain stimulation, arousal, and neuronal electrical activity. Primarily used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and seizures, they include alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids. They function by slowing down brain function and calming the user.
> Stimulants are a class of drugs that speed up central nervous system activity, increasing alertness, attention, energy, and heart rate. Common types include prescription medications (e.g., Methylphenidate, Amphetamine), ni****ne, caffeine, and illegal substances like co***ne and methamphetamine. They are used medically to treat conditions like ADHD, narcolepsy, and depression.
> Opiates are made from o***m or have o***m in them. Opiates bind to opioid receptors in the central nervous system. Examples of op**tes are codeine, he**in, and morphine. An op**te is a type of analgesic agent.
> Hallucinogens (also known as psychedelics or entheogens) are a diverse class of psychoactive drugs that trigger altered states of consciousness, marked by profound changes in perception, mood, and cognition. They are categorized into three main typesโpsychedelics, dissociatives, and deliriantsโand often cause users to experience hallucinations or "expansion of consciousness".
