The Philippine Society of Oncologists, Inc. endorses the UICC World Cancer Declaration 2025 which sets goals across the cancer control spectrum - from prevention, to early detection, management, supportive care and survivorship, with emphasis on coordinated planning, implementation and monitoring, education and research, and stakeholder engagement. The Philippine Society of Oncologists, Inc. shares the principles that guide the declaration - equity, collaboration, evidence, sustainability, and accountability. In a world that is increasingly becoming fragmented in terms of progress and values, this declaration is a call for a genuine and operational unification against the threat of cancer.

Statement on Public Shaming of Doctors!

The Philippine Medical Association condemns the recent viral post on social media publicly shaming a Surgeon Physician. Professional fees for doctors can vary based on several factors, including the complexity and type of service rendered and level of expertise of the physician handling the case. Each doctor has the right to determine the worth of his services rendered guided by a common relative value scale followed in the Philippines. Based on accounts on services rendered to the patient mentioned in the case the hospital charges and professional fees were within acceptable limits of ethical practice.

We therefore condemn the post to malign a physician who performed his duty well. He was singled out despite the fact that there were several medical specialists who handled this very complex case. Based on facts gathered the high professional fee in question was incorrect and was actually lower , the physicians even agreed to be paid with a guarantee letter! Considering the patient was treated with utmost compassion and concern by the several attending physicians for more than 20 days the social media post claiming “heartless treatment “ from the Physicians is unjust and uncalled for.

Let's focus on promoting a supportive and respectful environment for healthcare professionals. Doctors and all health care professionals play a vital role in our lives, and you should be acknowledging their hard work and dedication. You were treated and saved from near death to good health ready for discharge and you repay their kindness with Public shaming!

🥇 The Philippine Society of Oncologists, Inc., Committee on Awards is calling for nominations for various award categories which will be given during its 2025 Annual Convention Fellowship Night.

📋 The Criteria for the different Award Categories are the following:

💡The “Outstanding Teacher in Oncology Award” is given to a living Fellow of the PSO who is active, in good standing and has demonstrated exemplary ability as a teacher of medical students, residents or fellow. The term “Teacher” shall be understood in its generic sense and shall not be limited to persons with academic rank.

🔬 The “Outstanding Cancer Researcher Award” is given to a Fellow of the PSO who is active, in good standing, who has made significant contributions to cancer research.

🩺 The “Most Outstanding Oncologist Award” shall be given to a Fellow of the PSO in recognition of outstanding achievements as a clinician and teacher, or researcher in the field on oncology.

Attached please find the nomination form for your perusal. Please include a short write-up summarizing why the nominee deserves to receive the award he/she is being nominated for together with his/her CV and recent photo.
