February 13, 2026 is World Anemia Awareness Day

Today we celebrate World Anemia Awareness Day by raising awareness about early detection, timely treatment, and the importance of Patient Blood Management (PBM).

Anemia is a global health concern — but with PBM we can optimize hemoglobin, treat iron deficiency, and reduce unnecessary transfusions. Proactive anemia management improves recovery, reduces complications, and supports better health outcomes.

Right patient. Right treatment. Right time.

Better blood management means safer care.

In celebration of World Anemia Awareness Day, the UP-PGH Adult Hematology Division successfully conducted a Patient Blood Management (PBM) Workshop, bringing together colleagues from Internal Medicine, Surgery, OB-Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Nursing, and Laboratory for a meaningful multidisciplinary discussion.

The workshop centered on the three pillars of Patient Blood Management — optimizing red cell mass, minimizing blood loss, and improving tolerance of anemia — emphasizing that anemia management goes beyond transfusion decisions and requires proactive, evidence-based strategies. Through interactive case discussions, participants explored when transfusion is appropriate, when it can be avoided, and how PBM principles improve outcomes.

We thank our panelists, facilitators, and participants for making this workshop engaging and impactful as we continue to strengthen a culture of responsible blood management.

Together, we continue building a culture of Patient Blood Management — advancing safer, smarter, and more patient-centered care.

Anemia is frequently seen in older adults, but it should never be considered a normal consequence of aging.

It’s a signal—often of inflammation, nutritional deficiency, chronic disease, or even clonal hematopoiesis—that deserves proper evaluation. Early recognition matters because anemia impacts strength, cognition, quality of life, and mortality. Don’t normalize it. Investigate it. Treat what’s treatable.
