Colon polyps are common, usually benign growths on the inner lining of the colon or re**um, affecting about 20-40% of adultsβespecially those over 50. While typically symptomless, they can cause re**al bleeding or changes in bowel habits. Most are removed during colonoscopies because some can develop into cancer.
Key Information on Colon Polyps:
Symptoms:
Most people have no symptoms. If symptoms occur, they include re**al bleeding, blood in the stool, constipation or diarrhea lasting over a week, or abdominal pain.
Types:
- ADENOMATOUS POLYPS (ADENOMAS): These are the most common type and have the potential to become cancerous (precancerous).
- SERRATED POLYPS: These can be precancerous depending on their size and location.
- NON-NEOPLASTIC/HYPERPLASTIC POLYPS: Usually benign (not cancerous).
RISK FACTORS:
Age (50+), family history of polyps or colon cancer, smoking, high-fat/low-fiber diet, obesity, and inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis) increase risk.
Detection & Removal:
A colonoscopy is the gold standard for finding and removing polyps (polypectomy). Removed polyps are sent to a lab to check for cancer cells.
How Can We Prevent Colon Polyps from Developing or Getting Worse?
Some people consider COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY as part of their colon health routine. However, the most widely recommended prevention strategies include maintaining a high-fiber diet, regular exercise, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and following recommended screening guidelines.
COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY is a procedure that involves flushing the colon with warm, filtered water. The idea is to cleanse the colon of accumulated waste, gas, and toxins that may be contributing to bloating. By removing this buildup, the colon may function more efficiently, potentially reducing gas production and alleviating the feeling of fullness and distension.
