Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day shows the importance of iodine in maintaining good health. Iodine is an essential nutrient needed for the production of thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, and brain development. Further, its deficiency can lead to serious health problems such as goiter, hypothyroidism, impaired cognitive function, and developmental delays in children. Still, despite worldwide progress, iodine deficiency continues to affect millions, particularly in developing countries.
In the Philippines, iodine deficiency remains a public health concern. The Republic Act No. 8172, or the Act for Salt Iodization Nationwide (ASIN) Law, mandates that all salt for human and animal consumption be iodized to help eliminate iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). However, findings from the 2021 Expanded National Nutrition Survey (ENNS) by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) revealed that only one-third (33.2%) of Filipino households use adequately iodized salt. Awareness is higher among urban and wealthier households, yet actual utilization remains below target levels. Meanwhile, the 2018-2019 ENNS reported that pregnant and lactating women had insufficient iodine intake, with over 20% showing urinary iodine levels below recommended standards. This poses risks such as goiter, hypothyroidism, and impaired cognitive development in children.
Universal salt iodization remains the most effective strategy to prevent iodine deficiency. The public is encouraged to check that the salt used at home is iodized and to include iodine-rich foods such as seafood, dairy products, and eggs in their diets. Strengthened implementation of the ASIN Law and public awareness are key to ensuring that every Filipino has access to the benefits of adequate iodine nutrition.
