EYE MAKEUP HYGIENE & SAFETY TIPS!

Do you wear eye makeup in the past 12 months? Girl, you’re not alone.

But though you may like how your eyes look when you apply makeup to accentuate them, your eyes don’t always react well to wearing makeup.

To help you wear eye makeup safely, here are some tips and best practices to incorporate.

1. Clean Brushes Regularly:
Dirty tools can spread bacteria and cause eye infections.

2. Never Share Eye Makeup:
Sharing increases the risk of conjunctivitis and other infections.

3. Check Expiry Dates:
Old mascara or eyeliner can irritate eyes.

4. Remove Makeup Before Sleep:
Let your eyes breathe overnight — prevents irritation and styes.

5. Avoid Inner Lid Application:
It can block oil glands and cause infection.

6. Stop Using If Redness/Irritation Occurs:
Seek professional advice immediately.

Physical Effects of Longer Screen Time

Long screen time is linked to negative physical health outcomes. Mentally, it can lead to increased anxiety and depression, attention problems, and in children, delays in social and language development. Excessive use can also result in addictive behaviors and, in children, a thinning of the brain's cortex.

Physical Health Effects

Eye Strain:

Prolonged exposure to digital screens can cause eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome, leading to symptoms like headaches, blurred vision, and dry eyes.

Obesity:

Sedentary screen-based activities can contribute to obesity by reducing physical activity and promoting unhealthy eating habits due to advertising.

Sleep Problems:

Blue light from screens interferes with the brain's natural sleep-wake cycle, suppressing melatonin and making it harder to fall asleep.

Musculoskeletal Issues:

Poor posture while using devices for extended periods can cause chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain.

Other Physical Concerns: It can increase the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and low HDL cholesterol.

10 Signs to know if you need an eye exam

1. Blurred or Distorted Vision
If you're experiencing blurred or distorted vision, it indicates that you need an eye exam. This could signify various eye conditions, such as refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism). It can also indicate eye diseases like cataracts or macular degeneration.

An eye exam can help diagnose the underlying issue and provide the appropriate treatment or prescription.

2. Frequent Headaches

Frequent headaches, especially after reading or using a computer, can be a symptom of eye strain or an outdated eyeglass prescription. A comprehensive eye exam can identify whether your headaches stem from vision problems. It can also assist in finding relief through corrective lenses or other treatments.

3. Difficulty Seeing at Night

Struggling to see at night or experiencing glare from headlights while driving can be a sign of several eye conditions, including presbyopia, cataracts, or problems with your cornea. An eye doctor can diagnose the issue and provide solutions to improve your night vision.

4. Eye Pain or Discomfort

Persistent eye pain or discomfort is not something to ignore. It can indicate an infection, injury, or underlying condition such as glaucoma.

5. Floaters or Flashes of Light

Seeing floaters or flashes of light can be a normal part of aging. Sudden or severe occurrences can indicate a more serious condition, such as a retinal detachment. An immediate comprehensive eye exam is necessary to prevent potential vision loss.

6. Double Vision

Double vision, whether constant or intermittent, can signal a serious eye or health condition, such as a stroke, cataracts, or problems with the eye muscles. An eye exam can help identify the cause and guide you toward the necessary treatment.

7. Sensitivity to Light

Increased sensitivity to light, also known as photophobia, can be caused by various issues, including eye infections, inflammation, or other medical conditions. A comprehensive eye exam can determine the root cause and help you manage the sensitivity effectively.

8. Difficulty Focusing

If you find it challenging to focus on objects, especially when switching from near to far distances, it may be a sign of presbyopia or other focusing issues. An eye exam can assess your focusing ability and provide solutions such as reading glasses or multifocal lenses.

9. Red or Itchy Eyes

Red or itchy eyes can be symptoms of allergies, dry eye syndrome, or infections such as conjunctivitis. A comprehensive eye exam can diagnose the cause of your symptoms and recommend the appropriate treatment to relieve your discomfort.

10. Changes in Vision

Any sudden or significant changes in your vision warrant an immediate eye exam. This could include vision loss, seeing halos around lights, or experiencing blind spots. Such changes can indicate serious eye conditions that require prompt attention.

What is a Chalazion?

A chalazion is a red bump on your eyelid. It’s sometimes called an eyelid cyst or a meibomian cyst.
Painless, localized swelling (lump) on the eyelid caused by blockage and inflammation of a meibomian gland (oil gland) inside the eyelid.

🩺 Causes

It develops when something blocks a small oil gland in your eyelid. These glands (meibomian glands) help keep your eyes moist. A blocked gland begins retaining oil and swells. Eventually, the fluid will drain, causing irritation to your surrounding eyelid skin. This irritation can lead to a hard lump filled with the oil and fluid on your eyelid.
Often follows blepharitis (eyelid inflammation) or recurrent styes.

Symptoms
Firm, round lump in the eyelid.
Minimal or no pain.
Cosmetic concern.
Blurred vision if large.

Treatment
1. Warm compresses (4–5 times daily).

2. Gentle eyelid massage.

3. Good eyelid hygiene.

4. Antibiotic + steroid eye drops (if inflamed).

👉 Chalazion is not contagious and usually resolves with simple care, but recurrent cases may need medical attention.

Are you qualified to have a PWD ID?

Here are some things to know about Visual Disability:

1. Consult an Ophthalmologist:
Visit a licensed eye doctor to get a proper diagnosis and obtain a medical certificate or abstract to be presented on your application.

A person must have their vision examined, they must have a Visual Acuity of 20/70 or Lower(bigger letters) on both eyes. A Snellen chart, or a similar kind of chart must be used.

2. PROVIDED, the 20/70 or lower Visual Acuity should be after wearing the latest eyeglasses or Contact Lens correction.

3. Aside from Eyeglass and Contact Lens Correction, all possible medical and surgical intervention should’ve been done by an Ophthalmologist to check

4. Along or aside from the Visual Acuity, a severe reduction of Visual Field can also be a factor of being Visually Disabled.
Your eyeglass or contact lens prescription, no matter how low or high, is not the basis of being visually disabled.

For example, a person may have a -15.00 eye prescription on both eyes, but still be able to read 20/20.
While another person may have Zero eye prescription, but may see 20/70 because of an end stage eye disease.
