Let’s talk about the folks who are trying to backtrack on mocking Gus Walz because they didn’t know he had a disability.

Right. Okay. So …

Let’s start with the fact that he’s a seventeen year old kid who was so proud of his dad, whom he obviously loves deeply, that he was moved to tears. That’s beautiful, and a hell of a testament to their relationship.

But sure, some people thought his reaction was over the top and “weird.” And therefore fair game. Until they heard he has a disability.

(So, to recap, it would have been a-okay in that crowd to bully a typical kid for *acting atypical* but maybe he should be off limits now that they know he has a diagnosis.)

Pull up a chair, won’t you, friends?

Being an accepting, inclusive, and not completely sh*tty human isn’t about having access to everyone’s medical records. It’s about humanity. It’s about not having to know that there’s a label for a fellow human’s unique constellation of strengths and challenges in order to approach them with compassion.

It’s about not needing an explanation for why someone comes across a little - or a lot - differently from the average bear in order to indulge their quirks, celebrate their differences, support their challenges and accommodate their access needs, to give them extra time and love and leeway.

Labels / diagnoses / identities are important and valid and helpful in a million different ways, but they shouldn’t ever be the ticket that we demand from others before granting them entry into the arena of our empathy. The only fare needed is humanity.

So lay off the kid. Not just because he has a disability, but because he’s human, and that’s reason enough.

** Editing to add: Since so many of y’all are determined to turn this into some kind of “gotcha” moment that it really, really isn’t, let me save us all some time and trouble by telling you right here in the post that, Yes, I did say exactly the same thing when people were talking about Barron Trump …

RIP Dr. Brian Iwata.

I'm sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Brian Iwata. I never met him personally, but I attended his 2-day functional analysis workshop in 2003, and again in 2010. Particularly with the latter workshop, I remember sitting in a hotel meeting room in Boston with about 50-60 other Behavior Analysts when he walked us through data set after data set that showed how we can unintentionally fool ourselves with scatterplots, observations, analyzing ABC data, etc... Looking around the room, I could see that all the attendees' jaws were collectively dropping (myself included), presumably because we used these tools all the time. It was a transformative moment in my career.

A little over a month ago, I had this wonderful opportunity to strike up a conversation on capacity-building with some fellows-in-training, ambulatory pediatric fellows, and consultants from the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.

It really was refreshing to learn from the group and listen to their case vignettes as we brainstormed ways to better streamline service delivery, consultation, and collaboration in the Philippines. Thank you once again for the invitation and the participation!

Some neurodivergent perspectives from the autistic community.

This is what "indistinguishable from their peers" means.

[Picture of a maze, entitled "The path autistic people take to become “socially acceptable”:"
The maze starts with a blue stick-figure next to the words "Start off as your authentic self."
It then has sections with labels reading:
"Realise that there are unwritten rules that everyone seems to know except you."
"“No we don’t flap our hands in class.”"
"“But your special interest is ALL you talk about!”"
"Realise that when people say “be yourself”, they’re saying it to people who CAN be themselves without being judged."
"Suppress your real self to appease the bullies."
"Start making small talk instead of discussing interesting topics."
"Learn that other people lie and manipulate."
"Finally learn all the rules, and successfully mask your personality in front of most other people."
At the end of the maze, a red stick-figure says "But you don't LOOK autistic!", to which the blue stick-figure replies "I know. Sad, isn't it?"]
