Are under-eye fillers good for me?
I am often asked by my patients to apply under-eye fillers. My answer to these patients is simply: "Sorry, but I do not recommend the application of under-eye fillers". The patient will wonder "Why - after all, beauty clinics recommend this procedure?"

As an ophthalmologist, I care about the wellbeing of my patients, particularly when it comes to the area of the eye, probably the most sensitive organ of a human being.

Under-eye fillers aren't universally recommended due to several potential risks and limitations, including:

Risk of complications: The area under the eyes, also known as the tear trough, is a delicate and vascular area. If a filler is injected improperly, it can lead to serious complications like blindness or skin necrosis.

Potential for lumpiness or asymmetry: The under-eye area is thin-skinned and particularly prone to showing irregularities if the filler is not perfectly smooth or evenly distributed. This can result in a lumpy or uneven appearance.

Risk of Tyndall effect: This is a bluish discoloration that can occur when filler is injected too close to the surface of the skin. It's a particular risk in the under-eye area, where the skin is very thin.

Temporary solution: Fillers are not permanent and will be naturally absorbed by the body over time. This means that repeat treatments will be necessary to maintain the results, leading to more potential risk with each procedure.

Allergic reactions and side effects: Though rare, there can be allergic reactions to the filler material. Side effects like swelling, bruising, or infection can also occur.

May not address the root cause: If the under-eye issue is due to pigmentation, thin skin, or other factors, fillers might not be the most effective treatment.

It's crucial to have a comprehensive discussion with a skilled, experienced, and board-certified cosmetic surgeon and ophthalmologist before deciding to get under-eye fillers. They can help you weigh the benefits and risks and suggest the best treatment options for your specific concerns and goals.

In most cases, blepharoplasty surgery will provide a better and more aesthetically pleasing result.
