DDB Impromptu Visit Secretary Oscar F. Valenzuela, the new chairperson of the Dangerous Drugs Board, paid an impromptu visit to SELF’s Taal View House residential facility on Tuesday morning, September 16. He and his staff were received by Founder & President Martin Infante and COO Sockie Averilla who took them on a tour of the entire campus. In the free-flowing discussions that ensued, Secretary Oscar expressed admiration for the layout and setup of the facility. He also emphasized that the thrust of the present administration is on the treatment and rehabilitation of drug dependents. Secretary Oscar was accompanied by Assistant Secretary Ferdaussi B. Masner, Deputy Executive Director for Operations and two aides.

2nd Freddie’s Cup

The 2nd Freddie’s Cup held on September 10, 2025 punctuated the successful running of Soberlympics IV, SELF’s signature sporting event featuring a special volleyball match between the Staff and the Residents.
The event was instituted by Founder & President Martin Infante to honor his older brother, a staunch supporter of SELF, who passed away in 2020 during the pandemic.
Freddie was a major force behind the meteoric rise of women’s volleyball in the Philippines as he promoted its grassroots development that led to the discovery of many of today’s superstars. In line with this, he used to bring the upcoming players to SELF for exhibition matches.
The 2nd Freddie’s Cup was won by the Residents who prevailed in two straight sets, evening up the score as the inaugural match on September 7, 2023 was won by the Staff.

SOBERLYMPICS XIV
In celebration of its 33rd Founding Anniversary, SELF held the 14th edition of its trademarked Soberlympics intercolor sports competition from August 20 to September 11.
With the theme Unity in Sports Competition, residents and staff were divided into four teams — Red Monarchs, Green Defenders, Blue Knights, and Golden Warriors — that competed for supremacy in seven events: badminton, basketball, cheering, chess, scrabble, table tennis, and volleyball.
This year the Blue Knights were declared the champions after they edged the Red Monarks in the Cheering event by 0.33 percent and won by the slimmest of margins in the overall competition, 34 – 33.
As always, Soberlympics XIV was quite rewarding. Despite the fierce competition, the spirit of sportsmanship prevailed and the entire TC Community enjoyed having some good, clean fun.
Yes, there were winners and losers, but everyone emerged as champions of sobriety.

SELF just concluded the 28th TC Basic Management Course (TCBMC) on August 25 at the International Institute of Therapeutic Communities Training Center.
A total of 12 participants were enrolled in the 2-week course that ran till September 6.
Five are from the Department of Health Treatment and Rehabilitation Center
(DOH-TRC) in Zamboanga; five from DOH-TRC in CALABARZON; and two
from My Brother’s Keeper TC in Silang, Cavite.

The entire SELF Therapeutic Community extends its deepest condolences to the family of CHARI LA Ó BAGATSING who passed away on August 31, 2025 after an extended period of illness. Tita Chari, a member of SELF’s original Board of Trustees, was a staunch supporter and a very generous benefactor who helped to see us through during some very trying times. She was especially interested in the spiritual being of our residents in recovery. To this end, she used to sponsor regular Sunday masses and her son Patrick, a SELF graduate, was responsible for bringing the priest to our facility. We are proud that Patrick now serves as the Assistant Director for the Upper House and take comfort that we can offer him a warm space and some solace in this time of bereavement as his intentional family.

Helping Each Other Help Others

Founder & President Martin Infante brought an 11-person delegation, composed of 3 staff and 8 residents, from SELF on a visit to the Persatuan PENGASIH Malaysia TC facility in Pahang.
They were joined by Ranjan Dahr, Founder & President of Shafa Home in India, and two of his residents.
They received a warmly reception fro President Hafizi Harun and Secretary General Roslan Yahya.
The visit, which lasted from August 5-8, featured a tour of the facility and an exchange of best practices.
It was in line with Martin’s initiative as head of the Federation of Therapeutic Communities In Asia to conduct a tour of Member Organizations.

25 Years of Hope, Healing, and Transformation

Senior Program Director Eileen Simbulan and Clinical Head Inez Infante attended the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Malinao Treatment and Rehabilitation Center that was held in The Oriental Hotel, Legazpi City, Albay on July 29. Fittingly, theme of the event was “A celebration of hope, healing, and transformation.” Malinao TRC is a partner organization and over the years many of their staff trained at SELF including its Chief Health Program Officer John Roque Concepcion. In recognition of this enduring bond, SELF received a Certificate of Commendation.

These include an in-house Infirmary supervised by a physician and staffed by registered nurses as well as a fully equipped dental clinic with a dentist providing services on a regular schedule.

On July 3 SELF Founder and President Martin Infante was one of two featured speakers at an International Symposium organized by the Gyeonggi Community Addiction Management Center in 🇰🇷 Korea. The theme of the one day event attended by some 200 rehab practitioners and recovering individuals was “From Prevention to Rehabilitation for Individuals with Substance Use Disorders: Strategies for Recovery Support.”

Martin, as founding President of the Federation of Therapeutic Communities in Asia (FTCA) spoke at length on “How SELF Provides Training Using the Contemporary TC Model for Asia.” The other speaker – FTCA Board Member Augusto Nogueira – talked about the history and work of ARTM TC in Macau which he heads.

They were invited by FTCA Alternate Board Member Mihyoung Lee, the President of Korean Therapeutic Community Federation who took them on a tour of the rehab facilities and other interesting sites in the town.

Martin was accompanied by his wife Joy and Assistant Director Patrick Gallardo.
