DOH Calabarzon TRC Soft Opening

President Martin Infante, COO Sockie Averilla, Facility Senior Director Lyn Simbulan, and Admin Director Aldo Infante attended the Soft Opening of the Department of Health’s Treatment & Rehabilitation Center in Calabarzon on November 19. Seven of their key staff had just completed SELF’s TC Basic Management Course (TCBMC) and Martin was invited to speak about it. SELF has been conducting training programs for the frontline staff of DOH-TRCs from the different regions since 2012.

PAL MARIAN CENACLE RETREAT

The PAL Marian Cenacle prayer group held their 3rd annual spiritual retreat in the International Institute for Therapeutic Communities (IITC) Training Center from November 11-13. A total of 15 members attended the retreat with the theme “Discerning Where God is Leading Us.” Friar Dominic, OFMConv, who served as retreat master, led reflections centered on learning about selfless acts of service to others. The three-day activity included two masses by Friar Dominic. SELF Board Treasurer Joy Infante, a founding member of the group, showed them the ongoing construction site of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel & Lecture Hall. Grateful for the hospitality, they look forward to holding their 4th annual retreat in SELF again next year.

Balai Banyuhay Consultancy

The highlight of SELF’s 3rd & 4th consultancy visit to Valenzuela City’s Balai Banyuhay rehabilitation center on Oct 6 & Nov 17 was the conduct of therapy groups for staff members toward the fostering of unity and cohesion. This included a high level dialogue between Program Director Gene Bautista MD and Facility Physician Maricar Tolentino MD facilitated by COO Sockie Averilla with the support of Senior Program Director Lyn Simbulan and Admin Director Aldo Infante. For their part, President Martin Infante and Upper House Director Mai Fariñas met with the staff and and briefed them on purpose and mechanics of the Reconciliation Group process. Following this a Teach By session with officers and staff in attendance was held that resulted in the resolution of four festering misunderstandings. Everyone expressed satisfaction with the process and look forward to more such interventions.

GRADUATION 2025

Nineteen Aftercare residents received their Plaques of Graduation for completing SELF’s Treatment, Rehabilitation and Value Formation Program during the 29th Graduation Exercises held on Saturday morning, October 25, at the Sacred Heart Auditorium.Secretary Oscar F. Valenzuela, the new Chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Board, was the Guest of Honor and Commencement Speaker. Speaking on the theme of the graduation “Breaking Chains, Building Dreams”, he congratulated the graduates for their hardwork and triumph and hoped they would serve as an inspiration to many others hoping to recover from addiction. In the Finale, Upper House residents sent off the new graduates with a stirring rendition of Natasha Beddingfield’s Unwritten.

GRADUATES FAREWELL DINNER

SELF held its 2025 Farewell Dinner for the Candidates for Graduation at the IITC Pavilion on Friday evening, October 24.
After partaking of the fabulous spread sponsored by Dean & Deluca, the traditional final sharing was held.
Each of the 19 candidates expressed their joy and gave heartfelt messages of thanks.
Then the counselors took turns in recalling memorable incidents and wishing them well with some shedding tears of joy and sadness.
The evening ended with the candidates listening to a song dedicated to them: Michael Bolton’s “When I’m Back On My Feet Again”.

TREE OF SOBRIETY

The traditional planting of the Tree of Sobriety was held on Friday morning, October 24, a day before graduation, by the Batch 2025 Candidates with Upper House Assistant Director Patrick Gallardo as moderator.
This year a big change was introduced. Whereas in the past each candidate had a tree to plant, this time all the candidates would plant a single tree.
Chosen was the sapling of a Yakal Saplungan, an endangered species of hardwood endemic to the Philippines. Known for its strength and resilience, it was a fitting symbol of the candidates and their commitment to nurture their recovery.

SPIRITUAL RECOLLECTION

Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD held a spiritual recollection and celebrated Holy Mass at the Sacred Heart Auditorium (SHA) in SELF’s Taal View House Facility on October 7. The entire community — residents, staff and officers — attended the activity made possible through the kind efforts of FAM members Bob and Joyce Francisco.
The recollection formed part of the run-up to the 29th Graduation Exercises on October 25. It centered on maintaining an optimistic appraisal of life despite inevitable tribulations and complemented the drive of the TC program.
An avid believer in hope and healing, Fr. Jerry brought with him the bone relic of St. Ezekiel Moreno to whom he attributes his miraculous recovery from cancer. He also gave out scapulars.

DEVELOPING EDUCATORS

SELF conducted its Whole Person Development (WPD) program for the 6th time on September 29 to October 3. This time the trainees were composed of 22 educators from the Miamis Occidental Department of Education. Their chief — Superintendent Reynaldo Manuel, Jr. — who had attended the 3rd WPD decided the course would also help his staff to grow personally and professionally and the office to address organizational challenges. He flew to Manila to attend the Closing Ceremonies where he congratulated the participants and thanked SELF.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Senior Director Lyn Simbulan and Upper House Director Mai Fariñas attended the 61st annual convention of the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) that was held at the International Eucharistic Convention Center in Cebu City on September 25-27.
They joined hundreds of professionals, students, and enthusiasts from the Philippines as well as ASEAN countries as the event was held in conjunction with 8th Congress of the ASEAN Regional Union of Psychological Societies.
A distinguished lineup of local and international speakers presented papers and led discussions on “Futurescaping Psychology: Our Role in Attaining the Sustainable Development Goals.”
This theme was chosen in light of the explosion of new technologies that impact the profession, particularly the proliferation of artificial intelligence.
The participation of Lyn and Mai was fully sponsored by SELF as part of its program to support the professional and personal growth of its staff.

REVISITING TC BASICS
Seven officers of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) led by SJO4 Edward Dolormente, Regional Psychologist – BJMP NCR took a one-day study tour of the SELF TC program on September 17.The delegation was received by President Martin Infante and Senior Director Lyn Simbulan and given a tour of the facility. Then the officers attended a series of seminars and sat in on a Reconciliation Group of residents. A final session focused on TC Behavior Shaping Tools. The study tour is the latest in the ongoing engagement of SELF with the BJMP to propagate and strengthen the TC approach that began in the early 2000s.

33rd Founding Anniversary

SELF marked its 33rd Founding Anniversary on September 12 with a simple, intimate celebration attended in the main by residents and staff. It began with Holy Mass at 4:00 PM followed by a catered dinner at 5:00 PM.
The program proper with the theme “Sailing into New Seas” began promptly at 6:00 PM in the Sacred Heart Auditorium.
It was highlighted by the awarding of Service Certificates to Technical Supervisor Levi Almosara (25 years) and Safety Officer Deputy Head Romie Nalilin (10 years).
Also featured was a hilarious skit prepared by the residents that featured sailors in a long arduous search of the “Leaf of Life” only to find out in the end that you can only find it inside you.
2020 graduate Gaby Vasquez sent everyone home with a masterful rendition of two songs — “Somewhere” by Barbara Streisand and “A Million Dreams” from the movie, The Greatest Showman — feeling inspired and grateful.

TC CONSULTANCY SERVICES
A team headed by President Martin Infante paid a visit to Balai Banyuhay (BB), the drug rehabilitation facility of Valenzuela City on September 15. This was in line with the formal agreement of SELF with Mayor Wes Gatchalian to provide BB with management consultancy services toward developing a strong TC program. BB Program Director Gene Bautista MD and Facility Physician Maricar Tolentino MD welcomed the SELF team that included COO Sockie Averilla, EMU Director Lea Tumbado, and Facility Manager Jason Cordova.The day was spent on a round table discussion with senior program staff that elicited and addressed pressing operational concerns. The SELF team banked on learnings and insights garnered over more than three decades of practice to help the BB staff better understand the TC protocols. At the end of the process everyone expressed satisfaction with the proceedings. They all look forward to the next visit scheduled on October 6.
