Awareness Post: DIY Eyelash Extensions Can Be Dangerous

Applying eyelash extensions should only be done by trained professionals.

A 19-year-old female recently came to the clinic complaining of blurry and smoky vision, light sensitivity, burning sensation, and gritty feeling in her right eye. She accidentally dripped eyelash glue directly onto her cornea while attempting to apply eyelash extensions by herself.

Comprehensive eye exam was done and showed the following results:
• Visual acuity reduced to 20/40 with shadowy vision on the right eye
• Central corneal burn caused by the lash glue
• Conjunctival redness

Immediate sterile irrigation was performed, and she was referred to a corneal specialist for further management.

CHEMICAL BURNS ARE EYE EMERGENCIES. The cornea is a thin, delicate layer of the eye and any damage may lead to infection and even permanent vision loss.

Reminder: For your safety, eyelash extensions should only be applied by properly trained professionals.

This case is shared for awareness purposes with the patient’s permission.
