North Carolina State University researchers discovered cockroach infestations release high levels of allergens and bacterial endotoxins that worsen indoor air quality.
The study in Raleigh apartment complexes found female cockroaches produce twice as many endotoxins as males because they eat more food.
Endotoxins are bacterial cell wall fragments released when bacteria die, shed through cockroach droppings.
Kitchens contained more endotoxins than bedrooms due to abundant food sources. When pest control eliminated cockroaches, both allergen and endotoxin levels dropped sharply.
Untreated homes showed consistently high levels throughout the six-month study.
Future research will examine how cockroach allergens and endotoxins interact in asthma models.
