Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It happens when the plantar fasciaβ€”a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toesβ€”gets irritated or inflamed.

Key Points about Plantar Fasciitis:
β€’ Cause: Often due to repetitive strain or overuse, especially in activities that involve a lot of running, standing, or jumping.
β€’ Symptoms: Sharp pain at the bottom of the heel, especially when taking the first steps in the morning or after long periods of rest. Pain may ease with movement but can return after activity.
Risk factors:
β€’ Flat feet or high arches
β€’ Tight calf muscles
β€’ Poor footwear without support
β€’ Obesity or sudden weight gain
β€’ Activities that require prolonged standing
Treatment options:
β€’ Rest / limit activities that worsen the pain
β€’ Ice application to reduce inflammation
β€’ Stretching exercises for the foot and calf
β€’ Supportive shoes or orthotic inserts
β€’ Physical therapy

πŸ‘‰ It’s usually a self-limiting condition but can take several months to fully heal if not managed properly.

πŸ’‘WHAT IS A PHYSIATRIST?

A physiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). Sometimes we call them Rehab Doctors.

They focus on restoring function for people with injuries, illnesses, or disabilities affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

What they do:
β€’ Diagnose and treat pain and movement disorders
β€’ Manage rehabilitation after strokes, spinal cord injuries, or brain injuries
β€’ Help patients recover from musculoskeletal problems (e.g., back pain, arthritis, sports injuries)
β€’ Oversee rehab programs that may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other treatments
β€’ Use nonsurgical approaches (medications, injections, therapies, assistive devices) to improve quality of life

πŸ‘‰ In short: A physiatrist is a rehabilitation-focused physician who helps patients regain function and independence after injury, illness, or disability.

Bell’s Palsy and Stroke can both cause sudden facial drooping, but they are very different conditions.

Bell’s Palsy is caused by inflammation of the facial nerve, often from a viral infection. It usually affects the entire side of the face, including the forehead, eye, and mouth. Symptoms come on over hours and may include drooling, eye dryness, ear pain, or altered taste. It’s not life-threatening and often improves with steroids.

Stroke, on the other hand, is caused by interrupted blood flow to the brain and is a medical emergency. It typically causes drooping on the lower half of the face only, sparing the forehead. It often comes with other signs like arm weakness, slurred speech, or confusion. Fast diagnosis and treatment are critical.

A key difference:
β€’ If the forehead is also weak, think Bell’s Palsy.
β€’ If the forehead works, but the mouth droops, think Stroke β€”
