How to take care of your kidneys properly

Kidneys are the primary organs for our body's excretion. They also maintain a healthy balance of blood, water, salts, and minerals (including sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium) in our bodies.

Our kidneys are also essential in making hormones that help control blood pressure, make red blood cells, and keep our bones strong and healthy. Thus, damage to these organs has detrimental effects and consequences to our bodies

1. Avoid too much salt intake- Consuming too much salt may alter the sodium-potassium balance in our body, resulting in decreased kidney function. A healthy diet should include no more than 2300mg of sodium daily.

2. Avoid eating too much meat and processed food- High consumption of animal protein sources results in an increased intake of saturated fat, cholesterol, iron, and salt and an excessive acid load that may cause damage to our kidneys.

3. Do not overuse NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs)

4. Drink enough water- Keeping hydrated aids the kidneys in the removal of salt and toxins from the body. Individuals with kidney difficulties or kidney failure may need to limit their fluid consumption, but drinking 1.5 to 2 liters (3 to 4 pints) of water daily is the goal for most people.

5. Avoid smoking and drinking too much alcohol.
