Want to know why and how we started with our rabies prevention advocacy😃❓
A playbite from one of my dogs led me to a health facility to get vaccinated against rabies. Paid almost 20 thousand pesos for the 1st session alone 😱. This made me think. How can people afford to pay that much when they can barely afford food on the table? And sadly, that was true for the majority of Filipinos.
Coming home after that, I went to search for data on rabies cases, and found out at the time, Bulacan was 3rd in ranking. 3rd top province in the Philippines, in cases of rabies deaths; children and adults alike have died from rabies infection when it could have been prevented.
I thought, this cannot be!
For actually, the victims are the Children. Why? Because they are not the decision-makers. The adults are. The adults, the parents, the caregivers --- they decide if to get vaccinated or not, to go to tawak instead, to go get Jollibee instead.
This was how ACSA - Divine Mercy Medical Diagnostic & Animal Bite Clinic and MVS Medical Clinic/ Pandi Animal Bite Center came to be. I set out to have the clinics certified by the DOH Central Luzon to ensure delivery of quality service, and sought Philippine Health Insurance Corporation accreditation back when the whole regimen cost was barely covered. Co-payment was necessary back then. The main goal, make anti rabies vaccination accessible to all, whatever one's background may be. We provided education in the community on rabies prevention.
and became the first in .
Today, +/- 10 years later, both clinics are able to provide against to and with category 3 exposure.
To end, I just want to remind everyone of these:
1. Please make sure to have all your family members covered by Philhealth, not just for bite management, but to be able to access other health benefits. Ensure all are in the database. If not, update your info at the local Philhealth office near you. Your health is and shld be your responsibility primarily.
2. Vaccines are there to protect us from infection. But vaccines work when our immune system is able to function. Vaccines may fail, otherwise. So take care of your health, practice healthy habits - eat healthy food, avoid unhealthy food and beverages including alcoholic ones, sleep well, exercise daily, get sun exposure, and laugh often.
3. Post exposure vaccination is necessary to protect human lives, but we need to do more to eliminate rabies spread. Vaccination of strays, vaccination of pets, population control of animals by KAPON, are all equally important.
Anyone can make a difference.
YOU can make a difference, in your own sphere of influence. Let us all strive to make Bulacan safe from rabies infection, and the country a .
