This is Wow!

At just 22, Gwendolyn Lye was battling heart failure🫀 - and clinging to life with the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) life support machine.

Traditionally, patients on life support like ECMO are sedated and immobilised. The NUHCS and National University Hospital - NUH team took a different approach - 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐄𝐂𝐌𝐎 - where patients remain conscious and actively engage in physical rehabilitation to aid in their recovery. ❤‍🩹

“Awake ECMO patients can communicate better with the medical staff for more favourable outcomes, as well as partake in the rehabilitation process within a few days.” shared Adj A/Prof Ramanathan K.R., Senior Consultant, Division of Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, NUHCS.

Gwendolyn did not just survive. She moved. She fought. She won. 🙌

Awake ECMO helped her prevent muscle loss and allowed strength to be regained faster, so she could come off life support in just four days - half the usual time. ✨
