EVALI (e-cigarette or va**ng-use-associated lung injury) is a severe inflammatory condition primarily caused by inhaling harmful chemicals, most notably vitamin E acetate found in some THC-containing va**ng products. This substance acts as a thickening agent that, when aerosolized and inhaled, interferes with the lungs natural surfactant and triggers a profound inflammatory response. Consequently, patients often experience acute respiratory distress characterized by symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing, chest pain, and gastrointestinal issues. In severe cases, this injury can lead to permanent lung scarring, respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation, or even death.

Diacetyl is a yellow, volatile organic compound with an intense, natural butter-like flavor and aroma. While generally recognized as safe for ingestion in foods like butter, popcorn, and fermented beverages, chronic inhalation of concentrated diacetyl fumes is highly toxic and causes "popcorn lung" (obliterative bronchiolitis), a severe, irreversible respiratory disease. Diacetyl can damage your lungs. Symptoms include a dry cough, shortness of breath when using extra energy, and wheezing. The symptoms can start gradually, or severe symptoms can occur suddenly. The symptoms continue even when you are not at work.

Detoxification (detox) is the physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from the body, primarily managed by the liver, kidneys, lungs, and intestines. While often marketed as specialized diets, true detoxification is the body's natural metabolic process or medical intervention to manage acute intoxication and withdrawal from substances like alcohol and drugs. It removes harmful substances from the body, often resulting in temporary, intense withdrawal effects like nausea, fatigue, anxiety, headaches, sweating, and muscle pain.

Hallucinogens are a diverse class of psychoactive substances—including psychedelics, dissociatives, and deliriants—that significantly alter perception, thought, and mood. They create profound changes in sensory experience, often causing users to see, hear, or feel things that are not present. They are typically ingested orally (e.g., L*D blotter paper, mushrooms), smoked, or inhaled, affecting the central nervous system to induce vivid, dream-like experiences, hallucinations, and sometimes dissociative, stimulant, or entactogenic effects.

Depressants calm nerves and relax muscles. They are bright-colored capsules or tablets that are legally available through a doctor for medical reasons, but can be illegally abused. When used as prescribed by a doctor, depressants can calm nerves and relax muscles. However, larger or improperly used doses of depressant drugs can cause confusion, lack of coordination, low blood pressure, and slowed heart rate and breathing.

Passive smoking, also known as second-hand smoking, happens when people breathe in to***co smoke from others who are smoking. This smoke comes from exhaled smoke and from the burning end of ci******es, pipes, ci**rs, or sh**ha, and although often invisible, it spreads easily and can remain in the air for hours. Passive smoking is harmful and can cause serious health problems similar to those of active smoking, such as lung cancer and heart disease, and it is especially dangerous for pregnant women because it increases the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, and sudden infant death syndrome in babies.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas that you cannot see, smell, or taste. It is produced when carbon in fuels like gas, wood, or coal doesn’t burn completely. CO can build up indoors from things like gas stoves, heaters, fireplaces, generators, or car exhaust in attached garages. Breathing it in can cause health problems ranging from fatigue and headaches to confusion, chest pain, or even death at very high levels, because it stops your blood from carrying oxygen properly.

Tar is mainly produced from coal during coke production but can also come from petroleum, peat, or wood. Although some types of tar contain harmful substances, small amounts are used to treat skin conditions like psoriasis. Tar has been widely used throughout history for mummification, road paving, waterproofing boats, roofs, and buildings, and it is still used today to protect traditional wooden structures.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease causing airway inflammation, narrowing, and mucus production, leading to symptoms like coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness, often triggered by allergens, exercise, smoke, or infections, but manageable with proper treatment and trigger avoidance. While there's no cure, a combination of quick-relief inhalers and long-term control medications, alongside avoiding triggers, helps manage symptoms and prevent severe attacks, which can be serious

Thirdhand smoke (THS) is the contamination that persists after secondhand to***co smoke has been emitted into air. It refers to the to***co-related gases and particles that become embedded in materials, such as the carpet, walls, furniture, blankets, and toys. THS is not strictly smoke, but chemicals that adhere to surfaces from which they can be released back into the air, undergo chemical transformations and/or accumulate.
