Poor oral health can affect more than your smile. Dental issues like cavities and untreated tooth decay could lead to periodontal disease. A study by the Journal of the American Heart Association found that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease can lead to an increased risk of heart disease.

Oral health and heart disease are connected by the spread of bacteria – and other germs – from your mouth to other parts of your body through the blood stream. When these bacteria reach the heart, they can attach themselves to any damaged area and cause inflammation which results to endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart.

Even though maintaining oral health isn't a key to prevent heart disease, you should take care of your teeth and gums and visit your dentist regularly. It’s also important to talk to your dentist about your medical history, including whether you have a heart condition or a family history of heart disease.

By following a healthy lifestyle and addressing the common risk factors of both diseases, you can help improve both your oral and overall health!
