Most people still misunderstand what actually motivates people.
They think it’s more money, perks, or praise.
But according to the research, what people really want is something else entirely:
1. Autonomy – the freedom to choose how we work
2. Mastery – the chance to improve at something meaningful
3. Purpose – the feeling that our work matters
One study showed that when students were told they had to write an essay, their writing quality dropped.
When they were given a choice, the writing improved.
Why? Autonomy. It leads to higher quality outcomes.
Another experiment found that people who were given a sense of purpose before a task (rather than just a financial incentive) persisted longer and performed better.
Money can motivate in the short term. But if you want performance, creativity, and grit over the long term?
Give people a reason to care, and the room to run.

A $12 wine that tastes like a $90 bottle.
A bread maker nobody wanted...until they added a more expensive one.
A letter that saved 1 billion pounds of CO2.
These experiments reveal how your brain really makes decisions and how to use them in your ads.
In 2008, researchers at Caltech ran one of the wildest experiments in marketing history.
They gave 20 people wine through tubes while their brains were being scanned in an MRI machine.
They told people they were tasting 5 different wines priced from $5 to $90.
In reality there were only 3 wines.
The same wine was labeled both $90 and $10.
The result? People's brains actually experienced more pleasure when they thought wine cost more.
This wasn't people lying on a survey to seem sophisticated.
Brain scans showed the medial orbitofrontal cortex (fancy term for the pleasure center) was significantly more active when people drank what they believed was expensive wine.
Researcher Baba Shiv put it perfectly: "Price is not just about inferences of quality. It can actually affect real quality."
Your brain doesn't just expect expensive things to be better. It actually makes them feel better.
Professor Dan Ariely found something even more interesting about our brains.
He showed 100 MIT students 3 subscription options for The Economist:
So Ariely removed the middle option and only 32% chose the expensive option.
That "useless" decoy was driving $3,432 more revenue per 100 customers.
Williams Sonoma discovered this by accident.
They launched a $275 bread maker in the 1990s and sales were terrible.
Their solution was simply to add a slightly better $429 bread maker next to it.
Sales of the $275 version nearly doubled.
Nobody bought the expensive one, but its presence made the original feel like a bargain.
Most people don't know what things should cost and need context.
In 2000, Columbia professor Sheena Iyengar set up a jam tasting booth at a grocery store.
Some days she offered 24 flavors and other days just 6.
More choices meant more interest.
60% stopped to taste when 24 jams were available vs. 40% for 6.
But only 3% bought from the 24 jam display while 30% bought from the 6 jam display.
More options = 10x fewer sales.
Your customers don't actually want endless choices.
Kahneman and Tversky (the godfathers of behavioral economics) proved how easily we're anchored to random numbers.
They spun a wheel of fortune rigged to land on either 10 or 65.
Then asked: What percentage of African countries are in the UN?
People who saw 10 guessed 25% on average while people who saw 65 guessed 45%.
A completely random number shifted estimates by 20 percentage points.
Opower tested whether social comparison could change behavior.
They sent 600,000 households letters comparing their energy use to their neighbors.
This resulted in an average 2% reduction in electricity consumption.
That 2% sounds small, but across 15 million households it has saved over 1 billion pounds of CO2 and $75 million in energy costs.
People changed their behavior simply because they saw what their neighbors were doing.
Harvard and Duke researchers discovered the "IKEA Effect" in 2011.
They had people assemble IKEA boxes and fold origami.
Next they compared what builders would pay for their creations vs identical pre-built versions.
Builders valued their own work way higher than experts' creations.
(Important note: labor only leads to love when the task is completed successfully.)
Let customers participate in the creation of their purchase and perceived value skyrockets.
In summary here’s 6 truths about how brains actually work:
✅ Price changes actual experience (not just perception).
✅ "Useless" options drive purchasing decisions.
✅ Too many choices kills conversions.
✅ The first number anchors all future estimates.
✅ We do what our neighbors do.
✅ We love what we build.
The best marketers don't fight human nature...
They build campaigns around it.

Another innovation...
Scientists Created an Artificial Tongue That Can Actually Taste:
Researchers say the new AI-powered electronic tongue works like a human tongue.
It can distinguish between different coffee blends, detect spoiled drinks, and even identify harmful chemicals in water.
The system was built using an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor, which detects chemical ions in liquids and converts this information into electrical signals. These signals are processed by a neural network, an AI model that mimics the way the human brain interprets sensory input. Researchers from Penn State University say the device replicates how our tongue interacts with food and sends signals to the gustatory cortex, the brain region responsible for taste perception.
The researchers also tested the device on real-world samples, finding that it could differentiate between soft drinks, coffee blends, and detect when fruit juice had spoiled, or milk had been diluted. It also identified per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, which are harmful chemicals that are often found in contaminated water supplies.
This innovation could reshape food quality control, offering a faster, more reliable method for monitoring freshness and safety in beverages and other consumables. It could improve public health by detecting contaminants and harmful chemicals in drinking water.
It could also assist pharmaceutical manufacturing by verifying that liquid formulations meet precise chemical standards. The electronic tongue's adaptability could make it a valuable tool for ensuring food and beverage safety in various industries.
