โSimple back pain is not a joke. Some lower back conditions, if left untreated, can even lead to ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐.โ
Lower back pain is often caused by muscle strain or poor posture, but sometimes it can be a sign of a more serious condition. The lower back (lumbar spine) houses important nerves that send signals to the legs and lower body.
When these nerves are compressed or damaged โ such as in cases of herniated discs, spinal stenosis, spinal cord injury, or severe nerve compression (like cauda equina syndrome) โ it can lead to numbness, weakness, or even paralysis of the legs and lower body.
Thatโs why persistent or severe lower back pain should never be ignored. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can prevent permanent nerve damage or loss of mobility.
Sciatica is a condition that happens when the sciatic nerve โ the longest nerve in your body that runs from your lower back, through your hips, and down each leg โ becomes compressed or irritated.
Sciatica is not a disease itself but a symptom of an underlying problem, such as:
โข Herniated (slipped) disc โ when a spinal disc presses on the nerve.
โข Spinal stenosis โ narrowing of the spinal canal that pinches the nerve.
โข Degenerative disc disease โ wear and tear of spinal discs over time.
โข Muscle spasm (piriformis syndrome) โ when tight muscles in the buttock area press on the nerve.
โข Injury or trauma to the lower back.
Symptoms
โข Sharp or burning pain radiating from the lower back down one leg.
โข Tingling, numbness, or weakness in the leg or foot.
โข Pain that worsens when sitting, coughing, or sneezing.
โข Difficulty standing or walking due to discomfort.
Therapies and Treatments
The goal is to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve and reduce inflammation.
Here are common treatment options:
Physical Therapy
โข Stretching and strengthening exercises for the back and legs.
โข Posture correction and core stabilization exercises.
โข Helps improve flexibility and prevent recurrence.
Chiropractic or Manual Therapy
โข Gentle spinal adjustments or mobilization may help relieve nerve pressure.
