DHYANA or steadfast meditation is the seventh stage in the practice of yoga. In dhyana, consciousness is to be focused on a fixed point and the mind made steady. Regular practice of meditation calms and tones the nervous system, harmonizes psychic energies, reduces stress-related diseases like respiratory ailments, hypertension, drug and alcohol dependence, irritability, insomnia and cultivates serenity. Even five minutes of meditation, to start with, can provide immeasurable benefit. Twenty minutes of meditation is as invigorating as eight hours of sleep.

The sutra also outlines the eight limbs of yoga:
)yamas (restraints)
)niyamas (observances)
)asana (postures)
)pranayama (breathing)
)pratyahara (withdrawal of senses)
)dharana (concentration)
)dhyani (meditation)
)samadhi (absorption)
