Violence against women (VAW) and girls is not just a major public health problem but also a grave violation of human rights. It manifests gender inequity, targeting women and girls because of their subordinate status in society. The United Nations defines VAW as “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.” Violence and the threats of violence can be experienced by every woman of any age, skin color, gender identity, ethnicity, religion, disabilities, economic, and social status.

Global estimates by the World Health Organization indicate that about 1 in 3 women (35%) worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner or non-partner in their lifetime. In the Philippines, the National Demographic Health Survey 2017 released by the Philippine Statistics Authority revealed that 1 in 4 Filipino women, aged 15-49, has experienced physical, emotional, or sexual violence from their husbands or partners.

Because VAW appears as one of the country’s pervasive social problems, various measures and mechanisms have been employed and implemented to address it. One of which is the 18-Day Campaign to End VAW, an advocacy campaign that is observed annually from November 25 to December 12 as mandated by Proclamation 1172 s. 2006.

HEALTH SESSION ON HIV AWARENESS

August 12, 2022 - In line with the celebration of the International Youth Day, our friends from the Democrito O. Plaza Memorial Hospital (DOPMH) Young Adolescent Team represented by Ms. Geraldine Mosquera visited the center and conducted a health session on HIV Awareness participated by the residents and staff. HIV is a disease that does not discriminate and anyone can contract the disease. As such, it is very important to educate the youth on how to protect themselves and to prevent the transmission of HIV.

They also gave the residents some sports equipment such as volleyball, badminton rackets, and chess board as part of their advocacy to promote good health through sports. May this indicate a start of a fruitful partnership between the center and the DOPMH Young Adolescent Team in providing quality services to our clients.

Please add this to your prayers:

In order for our clients to experience healing, wholeness, restoration, and redemption, God uses the principle of “brokenness.” In the Bible, Jesus gave a visual of how brokenness can be multiplied for good. His body was “broken” for us, as the ultimate payment for our sins, guaranteeing our peace with God, our salvation.

He uses broken people. The staff. The family of the clients. The clients themselves. And even you as you pray for us! We become channels from which God's love, healing, and restoration will flow into the lives of broken people. We are also included in this. He brings healing into our lives as we pour it into others.

Pray that God will continue to use us as channels of His Love and healing to our residents. Also pray that God will continue His work of healing and transforming our clients to become the individuals that God wants them to be.

We are grateful for your help in the rehabilitation of our clients. ☺️❤️

"Ang edukasyon ay para sa lahat. Hindi hadlang ang kahirapan o kahit ang kasalanan para tayo ay makapagtapos ng pag-aaral"

Earlier today, twenty (20) clients of Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth graduated through the Alternative Learning System (3 Elementary Graduates and 17 Junior High school Completers). Most of these clients were Out of School Youth even before they were apprehended, some were forced to stop in their education when they allegedly committed the offenses, while some did not really get the chance to go to school because of poverty and other family problems.

During their stay in RRCY, they were given the opportunity to continue in their education through the Alternative Learning System led by ALS Facilitators Jocelyn Libradilla and Dazoi Martinez and ALS Coordinator Rochie Baldos Canoy . Three of these clients are now eligible to be enrolled in Junior High School, while seventeen are now eligible to be enrolled in Senior High School. The ALS has truly been a great help in our clients' rehabilitation and of course in reaching their dreams of graduating and helping their families in the future.

Soar higher guys!

A new batch of Social Work interns were welcomed by the center under the DSWD Student Training Program (STP), this time from Mindanao State University - Main Campus.

Earlier today, the RRCY Social Workers conducted an orientation of the center's programs and services, Case Management Flow, rules and regulations, Non-Disclosure Agreement, and Child Protection Policy to the social work interns.

The 3 interns will experience working in RRCY for a duration of more or less 6 months, handling clients and learning from the experience. This is in line with the vision of the RRCY staff that the center shall become a teaching facility, teaching and molding future social workers under our wing.

This is again a very exciting feeling for all of us. To a fruitful internship for you guys!

In line with the celebration of the Disaster Resilience Month, the center conducted 2 batches of Staff Development Sessions to the staff last July 19 & 22, 2022 and an Orientation to the residents last July 11, 2022 about the DRRM LAW and DISASTER EVACUATION PLANNING.

This is part of the goal of the department to equip its staff and its clients with the knowledge in order to make them ready whenever disaster strikes.
"We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm ourselves with knowledge"

Thank you to Mr. Michael Badajos Andohuyan , SWAD Team Leader of Agusan del Sur, for taking some time from his busy schedule to be the Resource Speaker for the 3 activities.

BAPTISM OF 2 RESIDENTS OF RRCY

July 12, 2022 - During the conduct of Monthly Mass, two (2) residents of Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth (RRCY) were baptized by Rev. Fr. Romeo G. Garcia and were welcomed into the Christian family.

These two(2) residents were not given the chance to be baptized when they were still babies because of certain reasons in their families. As such, the handling social workers made sure they will experience the sacrament of Baptism while being in the center.

Through Baptism, God enables us to participate in his life in Jesus Christ and makes us his children. It is through this sacrament that we receive the Holy Spirit and become members of the People of God, of the Body of Christ, which is the Church. We pray that this becomes their commitment to grow in this new life and to strive to acquire spiritual maturity and live godly lives in order to become blessings in their families and communities.
