๐ŸŒธ Breast Cancer Awareness Month: The Power of Breastfeeding in Prevention ๐ŸŒธ

Every October, we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month โ€” a time to honor survivors, support those currently battling the disease, and strengthen our commitment to prevention and early detection.

One important yet often overlooked way to help reduce the risk of breast cancer is through breastfeeding. Research shows that women who breastfeed have a lower risk of developing breast cancer later in life. Breastfeeding helps regulate hormones such as estrogen, which can influence the growth of certain cancers. It also promotes the shedding of breast tissue, which may help remove cells with potential DNA damage.

Beyond its health benefits for mothers, breastfeeding provides complete nutrition and immune protection for infants, strengthening their health from birth. It fosters a strong emotional bond between mother and child and supports lifelong wellness for both.

This October, let us continue to promote, protect, and support breastfeedingโ€”not only as the best start in life for every child but also as a natural, powerful step toward a healthier future for women.

Held on October 7โ€“10, 2025, the activity was participated in by some midwives from the City Health Office, as well as Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) of Trece Martires City, Cavite.

In partnership with PDOHO-Cavite and the City Government of Trece Martires, the activity aimed to enhance participantsโ€™ capacity on key topics such as Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN), Micronutrient Supplementation across Life Stages, and Listening and Counselling Skills. An awareness-raising session was also conducted for selected pregnant and lactating mothers from each barangay, focusing on Antenatal Care, Breastfeeding, and Complementary Feeding.

This initiative forms part of the regionโ€™s continuing efforts to improve nutritional outcomes among children by equipping frontline health workers with the essential knowledge and practical skills to effectively address and manage malnutrition in their communities.

Pero sa Pilipinas, marami pa ring mga bata ang nakararanas ng stunting o pagkabansot na tinatawag ding chronic malnutrition, isang kondisyon na dulot ng pangmatagalang kakulangan ng tamang nutrisyon na nagpapabagal sa kanilang paglaki.

Nililimitahan ng stunting hindi lamang ang pagtangkad kundi pati ang pag-develop ng utak, kakayahan sa pag-aaral, at maging ang kanilang kalusugan at kabuhayan pagtanda.

Ang magandang balita? Maiiwasan ang pagkabansot sa pamamagitan ng wastong nutrisyon, sapat na kalinga, at akses sa masustansyang pagkain, serbisyong pangkalusugan, malinis na tubig at sanitasyon, at mga social proection program sa mula pagbubuntis hanggang ikalawang kaarawan ng bata.

๐Ÿ“ขThe Department of Healthโ€”Center for Health Development IV-A, through the Nutrition and Breastfeeding Program, and in partnership with the Batangas Medical Centerโ€”Lactation Management Committee, successfully concluded the ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—˜๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐˜„๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒโ€”๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ (๐—•๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐Ÿฎ) on 24-26 September 2025 at the Batangas Medical Center, Batangas City.

The activity was participated in by healthcare workers from various hospitals across the CALABARZON Region, aiming to enhance their knowledge and skills in maternal and newborn care, with a special focus on lactation management. The first and second days of the training featured lectures, video demonstrations, interactive discussions, and role-playing activities to reinforce both theoretical and practical learning. On the last day, participants took part in a practicum session, which included a hospital tour, counseling of postpartum mothers, and a visit to the Human Milk Bank to learn the processes of pasteurization and storage of expressed breast milk.

This capacity-building activity was conducted in support of ongoing efforts to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding across healthcare facilities in the region and make them Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital and Workplace institutions.

In the wake of the recent earthquake that struck Cebu, the Batangas Medical Center Human Milk Bank, through the Human Milk Bank Association of the Philippines (HMBAP), extended its care and support by donating ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜‡๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐—บ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ธ to assist mothers and infants affected by the disaster.

The participants consisted of City Health Office staff, Barangay Health Workers, and Barangay Nutrition Scholars of Tanauan City, Batangas. It was held last September 9-12, 2025 at Collantes Center, Tanauan City, Batangas.

The activity, conducted in partnership with ๐๐ƒ๐Ž๐‡๐Ž-๐๐š๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐ฌ, ๐๐‡๐Ž-๐๐š๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐ฌ, ๐‚๐‡๐Ž-๐“๐š๐ง๐š๐ฎ๐š๐ง, and the ๐‚๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐“๐š๐ง๐š๐ฎ๐š๐ง, aimed to strengthen the capacity of participants in key topics such as child nutrition, malnutrition assessment, dietary management, anthropometric measurements, MNIYCF counseling, and other community-based interventions. A practicum session with pregnant and lactating mothers served as the culminating activity, allowing participants to apply their enhanced skills in real-time community settings.

This initiative aims to contribute significantly to improving nutritional outcomes among children in Tanauan City by equipping frontline health workers with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively address and manage malnutrition.

The Center for Health Development โ€“ CALABARZON Nutrition and Breastfeeding Program successfully conducted the โ€œ3rd Quarter Municipal Nutrition Coordinators Meeting of Rizal Provinceโ€ on ๐Ÿ“… August 22, 2025 at ๐Ÿ“ Madison 101 Hotel, Quezon City.

The meeting opened with a presentation on the prevalence of underweight, stunting, and wasting in the regionโ€”highlighting their public health impact and importance in identifying high-risk and high-burden areas. The results presented serve as a vital basis for program planning, resource allocation, and prioritization of LGU-led interventions to address malnutrition in the most vulnerable communities.

Ms. Kyla Guarda, Nutrition Officer II of the National Nutrition Council โ€“ CALABARZON, also provided important updates, including discussions on the Magna Carta for BNSs, progress on Nutrition Action Plans, and other NNC activities and announcements to guide LGUs in their next steps.

The Nutrition and Breastfeeding Program likewise shared its planned activities for 2025 and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening community-based nutrition efforts across Rizal Province.
