DEPENDENCY TO DIGNITY

From 1987 to 1989, Yeoh Seng Eng and his wife, Chwen, made short term trips to the Philippines and were struck by the social condition of the communities where thousands of people lack access to basic needs. In 1998, they moved to the Philippines to work among the poor. In 2000, they started Care Channels Inc. to help the poor to break out from the poverty cycle and move them from dependency to dignity.

Men, women and children living in the slums were taught skills such as the making of cards and picture frames, and given opportunities to either make a living or supplement their income. Education sponsorships were offered to enable children to attend school. Health and medical care were made available to many who could not afford medical check-ups and medicines.

The seed planted in the Philippines spearheaded the establishment of Care Channels International (CCI) in 2004 in response to the poverty issues in the region. CCI programmes have brought about changed attitudes and renewed confidence in many lives. Coupled with practical and material help, the work has lifted the flagging spirit of the poorest and given them strength and hope in life.
