The official page of the UP Philippines-Japan Friendship Club or more popularly known as UP Tomo-Kai!

📨 For partnerships and sponsorships:
uptomokai.linkages@gmail.com TOMO-KAI is an organization that started from the pursuit of seven students now known as the 7 SAMURAI (Deric, Eric, Alf, Kit, Gay, Flor, and Daniel) who were interested in the Japanese culture and language. With this came their desire to promote their newfound fascination to the Filipinos and also serve as instrument in fostering mutual relations and understanding between Filipinos and Japanese. For many years, we have proven our worth as a vital instrument in fostering and strengthening the better relations and understanding between Filipinos and Japanese. The organizations annual exhibits of various Filipino and Japanese arts, usually held during its anniversary, have been one of the most admired presentations in the university. The organization also conducts series of learning seminars where the members and the Japanese interact and eventually gain better awareness of each others culture. When Japanese students from Nihon Fukushi University, Takushoku University, Meiji Gakuin Daigaku, Soka Daigaku, and other Japanese schools visit, the organization makes it a point to participate with them in and entertain them through fun-filled activities and gatherings, which will make their stays memorable. Tomo-Kai also keeps in touch with U.P.s very own Japanese exchange students residing for a longer time (usually for a year) in U.P.s International Center. It is the dream of the past and present members of U.P. Moreover, these are not only concentrated on culture itself but also on the meaning of friendship. The various activities help foster amiable relations between Filipinos and Japanese, also between fellow Filipinos, specifically through Out-Reach Programs that we hold at least once a year.

The moon looks beautiful tonight, doesn’t it? 🌕✨

As we bask in its gentle glow, we’re reminded of the beauty in simple moments. In shared stories, warm company, and time that slows just a little under its light.

This May, we celebrate UPTK’s anniversary with grateful hearts, honoring the connections we’ve built and the shared experiences that bring us closer across both Japanese and Filipino cultures. 🫶🤍

[KANJI OF THE WEEK #5]
This week's kanji is 空, which means empty, sky, void, vacant, or vacuum.

Some word usages include:
☁️ 空気 (kuuki) - air; atmosphere; mood
✨ 空想 (kuusou) - daydream; fantasy; vision

Sometimes we need empty space to dream and imagine new possibilities!

Just 1 Day Left! 🌧☀️

To grasp the clouds behind these gloomy days, join us in our event, PAG-ASA | Pag-朝.

The Philippines and Japan both lie along the Typhoon Belt and the Pacific Ring of Fire. Riddled with natural disasters, the people hold out with hope and tenacity. These struggles and aspirations become reflected in the puddles of our superstitions and beliefs. 🪄 🔮

Resilience is one thing but we are not alone in this atmosphere. Accountability must be sought from those who possess broad responsibility. ✊🏼

Our lecture-workshop aims to shed light on the scientific 🔬, mythical 🐲, and political ⚖️ aspects of Philippine and Japanese rainstorms. You may also partake in our てるてる坊主 (Teru Teru Bouzu) dollmaking activity – a collective expression of hope for sunnier days 🌤️

February 24, 2026 (Tuesday)
1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Room 210, CAL Building

🌤️ Meet our esteemed speakers for PAG-ASA | Pag-朝! 🌤️

✨ Leo Niel Jasper Sese ✨ is an MA Asian Studies student and UPCIS Lecturer, as well as a member of the UPCIS Bunraku Ensemble. He also served as UP Tomo-Kai’s President from 2022 to 2023. His deep engagement with Japanese performing arts and cultural traditions enriches our understanding of how beliefs and practices are shaped across cultures.

✨ Dr. Gerry Bagtasa ✨ earned his doctorate in Atmospheric Physics / Atmospheric Remote Sensing from Chiba University, Japan. He completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Physics at De La Salle University Manila and is currently a Professor at the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology at the University of the Philippines. His expertise helps us better appreciate the meteorological connections between Japan and the Philippines and the realities that influence both nations.

Through their combined insights, we will explore shared meteorological phenomena, the beliefs and superstitions that emerge from them, and the political responses they inspire. ☀️

🌅 Join UP Tomo-Kai's ACLE entitled PAG-ASA | Pag-朝 on February 24, 2026, from 1:00–3:00 PM at CAL 210!
