Alexes Harris was a healthy mom and professor when she was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer and told she had limited time to live. After chemotherapy wasn’t enough, doctors turned to a cord blood transplant — using stem cells from a baby’s umbilical cord — because no perfect bone marrow match could be found.
Three weeks after the transplant at UW Medical Center, she showed no sign of cancer, and today she’s living life with her family and health restored.
“This donated cord blood saved my life,” she says — a powerful example of how cord blood stem cells can be life-saving when traditional donor matches are hard to find.
