AI-generated flood situation maps for and are now up at https://hazardhunter.georisk.gov.ph.

These show flooded areas that were identified by an artificial intelligence model from satellite images.

Here's a step by step guide to walk you through the whole experience and process. Go check them for yourselves!

You can also overlay other hazard maps for more data sources. Please note that further validation is being conducted.

Satellite images need to be calibrated and validated. This is where OpenStreetMap (OSM) comes in.

Initiated by MapBeks, 2 new URGENT OSM tasks on Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) Tasking Manager are launched and they need help in mapping builtup areas in Quezon Province, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur for Typhoon . Data that will be generated can help in the disaster response to identify the location of remote communities.

Tasks include

Quezon - Landuse:
https://tasks.hotosm.org/projects/9722

Camarines Sur and Norte:
https://tasks.hotosm.org/projects/9723

First time to use OSM? Donโ€™t worry! Instructions are given once you log in to OSM.

This initiative is also supported by Ministry of Mapping, Mental Health AWHEREness, Mapmaker, MAPA DATOS, Humanitarian Openstreetmap Team Philippines - HOT PH, OpenStreetMap Philippines, Geoladies PH, and UP Resilience Institute Youth Mappers.

On October 29, 2020, Filipino-made microsatellite Diwata-2 marked its second year in orbit.

Satellites that orbit several hundreds of kilometers from the Earth cannot โ€œseeโ€ viruses but they can be used to detect valuable โ€œproxiesโ€ or indicators that help build models for enabling effective response, monitoring and even prediction. As infectious diseases emerge from localized places or clusters and spread through physical transmission pathways, satellites can support the modeling of outbreak occurrence and spread by providing relevant geospatial data that span large geographical swaths at high resolution and regular frequency. As such, they are becoming an indispensable tool in pandemic response.

Today's Science History Milestone: On August 22, 1875, British physicist William Eccles was born. He is considered a pioneer in the development of radio communications technology. He also co-patented the flip-flop circuit, which became the basis of electronic memory in computers.

TODAY'S SCIENCE TRIVIA: There are six cloud rat species (and two dwarf cloud rat species) that are native to the Philippines. All of them are either threatened or endangered, and the Dinagat bushy-tailed cloud rat (๐˜Š๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜บ๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ด) is considered the rarest and most elusive of them all.

Long feared extinct, researchers unexpectedly rediscovered the 2.5-foot-long rodent in 2012, nearly four decades after its first appearance on an island northeast of Mindanao.

Fronthaul is associated with a new and different type of Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture consisting of centralized baseband controllers and standalone radio heads installed at remote cell sites located kilometers to tens of kilometers away. These BBU and RU functional blocks, as well as the equipment that performs these functions, are located further away from each other than in the mobile backhaul model.

You know mobile backhaul...but what is mobile fronthaul? Our expert Brian Lavallรฉe explains.
