This holiday season, we celebrate not just the joy of Christmas, but the beauty of love, hope, gratitude, and togetherness that unite us all—whatever tradition or belief we hold.

To our dear Valplay kids, parents and guardians, therapists, teachers, staff, and our entire Valplay Family—thank you for trusting us, walking with us, and believing in every little step toward big dreams. 🌟

May this season bring your homes peace, your hearts comfort, and your days filled with warmth and kindness. For those celebrating Christmas, may it be joyful and meaningful. For those observing other holidays, we wish you a wonderful, restful, and happy season as well.

As we welcome a new year, we look forward to continuing our journey together—
✨ Healing Hands, Caring Hearts
✨ One Valplay Family

With love and gratitude,

💪🏼The Proprioception System!

October is Sensory Processing Awareness Month! To help spread awareness, I am sharing a series of graphics about the 8 sensory systems.

The proprioception system is the internal sense of movement and position (body awareness). It helps us know where our limbs are, how much force to use, and how to coordinate our movements. The receptors are in the joints, muscles, and tendons and perceive contraction, stretching, and compression.

You'll notice I included a list of possible seeking behaviors and challenges. This is not intended to be used as a diagnostic tool, but rather for educational purposes. If you have any concerns or questions, please consult with your child's doctor and request an Occupational Therapy evaluation.

Some ways you can address proprioception sensitivities include:

* Weighted lap pads or vests
* Bean bag chair to sit in
* Heavy work activities
* Swimming
* Karate
* Climbing
* Playing in a sandbox
* Carry groceries
* Wearing Lycra
* Chair push-ups
* Dancing
* Washing the car
* Rolling a ball
* Yoga Stretches
* Pillow fights
* Chewing bubble gum
* Using the monkey bars at the playground

🎧 The Auditory System

October is Sensory Processing Awareness Month! To help spread awareness, I am sharing a series of graphics about the 8 sensory systems.

The auditory system, or hearing, includes hearing, listening, interpreting, localizing sounds, and being able to filter and selectively attend to auditory stimuli.

You'll notice I included a list of possible sensitivities for seekers and avoiders. This is not intended to be used as a diagnostic tool, but rather for educational purposes. If you have concerns or questions, talk to your child's doctor and ask for an Occupational Therapy evaluation.⠀

Some ways you can address auditory sensitivities include:

* Use headphones or earplugs to block out background noises
* Simplify language when giving instructions to your child or in the classroom
* Give a verbal or visual warning before loud sounds (like fire drills) to cover ears.
* Try Therapeutic Listening programs
* Include a rain stick in your sensory space or room
* Musical instruments, such as shakers, or learning to play an instrument
* Calming, soft music to encourage regulation and self-calming
* Use a white noise machine, fan, etc.
* Play clapping games
