PLEDGE TO LESSEN WASTE

Pollution is one of the greatest challenges we face today. Precious water has been contaminated, along with food crops, air, and other essential resources. Our throwaway culture has created this mess. Polystyrene is used primarily as disposable food containers. After used for a few minutes of sipping, straws are immediately thrown and end up as trash. Such is also the sad fate of balloons- mainly used for decorative purposes, they inevitably pop and become non-biodegradable trash that will persist for centuries. All of this poses a danger to wildlife as they could be accidentally ingested, which has already been documented in many marine creatures.

In line with this, we the undersigned organizations, pledge against the use of straws, balloons, and polystyrene in any of our events; furthermore, this campaign shall be passed on to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Community Affairs to call for a university-wide ban on such items.

It is hoped that UP Diliman will serve as an example in reinforcing sustainable campus policies.
