For more than two decades, 50-year-old 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗰 has quietly carried the responsibilities of both a government employee and a kidney transplant survivor. Diagnosed with end-stage renal disease in 2001, she underwent a life-saving kidney transplant at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) on September 3, 2003, with her mother as her donor. The transplant restored her health and allowed her to return to work, but the journey afterward came with a lifelong commitment to maintenance medications and regular monitoring. For 22 years, Mona balanced her job with the demanding routine of securing financial assistance just to sustain her anti-rejection medicines. Every month meant paperwork, guarantee letters, and frequent leaves from work to process support from different agencies. It was a routine she had grown used to—but one that constantly reminded her how fragile access to life-saving treatment could be.

------

Monthly talaga.

After the interview at filling up ng forms, pumunta na agad kami sa pharmacy. Within the day, nakuha ko na yung medicines ko.

At 50 years old, 𝗟𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗝𝗿. is a seasoned public servant, having dedicated 20 years of his life to the LGU of Plaridel, Bulacan. But his most grueling role wasn't behind a desk at the municipal hall; it was as a patient fighting a hereditary battle against polycystic kidney disease. Lamberto underwent a cadaveric transplant on March 3, 2020—just two weeks before the world ground to a halt due to the pandemic. While the surgery gave him a new lease on life, it triggered a years-long financial marathon. Navigating a modest government salary burdened by loans, Lamberto spent nearly five years in a constant state of "survival mode," stitching together a lifeline of medications through a patchwork of Guarantee Letters.

----------

𝟮𝟯 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 — To promote sustainable practices and environmental stewardship, the NKTI released a hospital policy to help reduce the use of single-use plastic water bottles without compromising patient safety, infection prevention and control, and the quality of healthcare services.

Except where patient care situations call for the use of single-use plastic water bottles as medically and clinically indicated, all are encouraged to "𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿-𝗢𝘄𝗻-𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 (𝗕𝗬𝗢𝗕)" (according to NKTI Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) guidelines).

This initiative, as well as other future sustainability programs, will be overseen by the newly constituted 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲, who will monitor, formulate policy, and oversee implementation of these environmental initiatives moving forward.

Rey Garcia
Public School Teacher and Loving Husband
HUMANS OF NKTI

For Rey Garcia, Ruby’s liver transplant came at a time when their family was still recovering from a previous medical crisis. Only months earlier, Rey himself had undergone an angioplasty — a procedure that left them financially strained and navigating the long, exhausting process of securing financial assistance. Just as they were beginning to regain stability, Ruby’s diagnosis demanded another life-saving intervention. As husband, father, and primary caretaker, Rey carried the weight of coordinating medical clearances, seeking support, and making urgent decisions — all while confronting the fear of losing his wife and the reality of starting over financially once again.
———

May encouragement. May nagpapalakas ng loob. Sinasabi nila, “Kaya yan.
May updates twenty-four seven.

May preparation stage pa nga dapat kami, 3 to 6 months na paghihintay.
