Ang bigat ng mundo lately, ‘no? 😔

Bad news after bad news, challenges at work, problems in life, and still, you keep showing up for others. You listen, help, and care, even when things already feel too heavy.

Caring for others is meaningful, but it can also take a lot out of you— emotionally, mentally, even physically. In times like these, it’s easy to forget that your own heart needs care too. 🫂

Remember, when everything feels like too much, it’s okay to step back for a while. You don’t have to be okay all the time just because you’re the one people turn to. You’re not being selfish or apathetic; you’re simply giving yourself the same kindness you’ve always given everyone else.

So if you’re feeling drained lately, let yourself breathe. Rest. Disconnect if you need to. The world can wait a little while, because you deserve to feel okay again before putting others first.

This Mental Health Month, let this be your gentle reminder: your empathy is a strength, but so is knowing when to care for YOU. Because caring for yourself is also an act of love, for you, and for those who need your light. ☀️

In the Philippines, millions of adults experience emotional distress – yet only a small fraction ever speak to a mental health professional. For many, it’s not a matter of willingness, but access: therapy can be costly, services are scarce outside Metro Manila, and stigma still makes it hard to reach out.

This is where the Brief Psychological Services (BPS) of the Ateneo Bulatao Center comes in. Each ₱600 donation helps fund one free online counseling session for a Filipino in need. But what happens behind that single session?

Every BPS responder, a graduate student in psychology, undergoes a series of training on brief psychological interventions and continues to receive group and individual mentorship from licensed psychologists throughout the program. This ensures that every session is guided, ethical, and grounded in both compassion and science.

And while BPS offers only one to two sessions, for many of our clients, it’s their first time talking to a mental health professional. Sometimes, even one conversation can help someone see themselves with more clarity, find hope, or take the next step toward long-term healing.

If you believe that mental health care should be within everyone’s reach, this is one simple way to make it possible.

Disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, or accidents can be unexpected and overwhelming. Such events can take on a psychological toll. An awareness and understanding of our reactions to these events is an important first step in coping and coming to terms with tragic events.

SOME COMMON REACTIONS:
-Strong feelings of anxiety, grief, and sadness
-Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
-Disrupted sleep and eating
-Sensitivity to loud sounds
-Irritability and increased conflict with others
-Headaches, nausea, and chest pain, and other physical symptoms

HOW CAN WE COPE?
-Be aware of your feelings and give them a name.
- Allow yourself to mourn and adjust. It might take a while but giving yourself space is a good first step.
- Seek social support. Whether it’s with friends, family, or fellow victims, this can help feeling connected while you recover.
- Establish routines. Regular meals, sleep, and even exercise can help you regain a sense of control over the situation.
- Identify problematic situations and use problem solving strategies to try to resolve them effectively.

Even as these reactions may be common and to be expected, consider seeking professional help if you find these feelings persistent or intense.

October is World Mental Health Month! This year, our focus is Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies. Amidst the natural disasters, health crises, and political turmoil, our country may be experiencing, mental health needs to be part of our consideration.

According to the World Health Organization, 22% of people who have experienced war or conflict in the previous 10 years tend to suffer from some form of mental illness/condition. On top of this, about 13% of those exposed to conflict may also experience milder forms of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO?
- Volunteer to assist in evacuation centers in affected areas. Addressing basic needs is a key step to mitigating the negative effects of conflicts and disasters. Reach out to an NGO or group who are mobilizing help.

In the wake of the recent earthquake in Cebu and the back-to-back tropical storms Nando and Opong, we recognize how disasters can leave not only physical damage but also emotional wounds.
Since 2021, the Brief Psychological Services (BPS) of the Ateneo Bulatao Center has been offering free short-term online counseling sessions to Filipinos in distress. BPS was born out of the call to service during the pandemic and Super Typhoon Odette, when our psychologists-in-training came together to provide immediate mental health support to those most affected.
Today, we continue this mission. If you are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or struggling to cope, you do not have to carry it alone. Our trained BPS providers are here to listen, support, and help you find ways forward. 💙

02/10/2025

Being there for others and showing compassion can get the best of us feeling spent, exhausted or even resentful at times. This is particularly common for those in helping professions--medical professionals, educators, community workers, and even service crew.

WHEN DOES ONE EXPERIENCE FATIGUE?
There is no criteria but common signs are:
- feeling numb or irritable
- difficulty sleeping
- lack of focus
- actively avoiding work

HOW CAN WE PREVENT THIS ESCALATION?
- Think of rest as a Responsibility. If we want to care of others better, then we have to take care of ourselves first. In service work, we are our primary asset.
- So, set clear boundaries. You can always get back to caring for others later. Honor and treat as 'sacred' the time you set aside for self care.
- Seek Peer Support. Have space where you can share and decompress with, and feel seen by other people. Connecting with others can be life giving.

Remember, this is not a choice between caring for yourself or other people. Making space and balancing both is the more compassionate option. You can then maintain the quality of care you extend to others as you care for your own needs as well.
