LOOK: BS in Fisheries student garners award at international conference in Indonesia

Vyenge Erre Gayosa, a BS Fisheries student who graduated last July 9 at the Institute of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS-IA), received an award at the recently concluded Asia Pacific Aquaculture 2024 (APA24) with the theme "Aquaculture—Driving the Blue Economy," organized by the World Aquaculture Society (WAS) Asian Pacific Chapter (APC) in Surabaya, Indonesia, from July 2–5, 2024.

Gayosa is one of three winners of the best pre-conference abstract competition. He presented his undergraduate research work titled "Dietary Ulvan Supplementation to Early Juvenile Milkfish Chanos chanos Improved Growth Performance, Immune Gene Expression, and Survival Against Vibrio harveyi.”

The award was given based on the following criteria: submission format, abstract title, abstract substance, scientific and research value, application potential, scope, and clarity. All students who submitted an abstract and presented a poster or made an oral presentation were evaluated.

The annual conference and exhibition organized by the World Aquaculture Society are recognized as the premier aquaculture events, offering an ideal opportunity for all stakeholders in the fisheries and allied industries, including researchers, academics, students, farmers, and others, to showcase their accomplishments and explore new avenues of research.

Ahead of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s third State of the Nation Address, his administration’s performance in socioeconomic issues was assessed by economists from Ibon Foundation in the 2024 Midyear Birdtalk on July 16. Co-presented by the All UP Academic Employees Union and the UP Office of the Faculty Regent, the biannual Birdtalk also featured discussions on emerging political trends because of next year’s midterm elections.
Ibon Foundation Executive Director Sonny Africa refuted the administration’s claim that the Philippines has become Southeast Asia’s “economic superstar,” saying that the country’s economy still struggles with slowing growth, high poverty incidence, poor quality of employment, and severe income and wealth inequality. “By measuring the administration by the standard it set for itself, which is an ‘all-inclusive economic and social transformation,’ I think very clearly, not only are we not transforming; we are actually sliding backwards on all the things that matter,” Africa said.
Meanwhile, Ibon Foundation Research Head Rosario Guzman linked the persistence of the country’s “backward” economy to the “undemocratic” character of its politics—evident in intensified dynastic rivalries, the persistence of widespread corruption, the tightening stranglehold of oligarchic rule, violent and systematic repression, and subservience to foreign powers. She asserted that Filipinos “need a strong state… that will stand up for economic democracy, that will stand up for national development, and that will stand up for democratic governance — a state that will uphold human rights and people’s welfare, a state that will fight for national sovereignty.”
