IMPORTANCE OF FOLIC ACID BEFORE AND DURING PREGNANCY

1. During early development, folic acid helps form the neural tube.

2. Neural tube defects are severe congenital disabilities that affect the spine, spinal cord, or brain and may cause death.

3. Folic acid is essential because it can help prevent some significant congenital disabilities of the baby's brain (anencephaly) and spine (spina bifida).

4. There have been some studies that suggest folic acid may increase the likelihood of conceiving multiples.

5. These studies are not large scales and have not been confirmed as scientific facts. However, Folate supplementation before conception has been associated with a greater chance of getting pregnant and improved success with fertility treatments.

6. Women preparing to conceive are advised to take 400 micrograms of folic acid tablets daily and until after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

7. Natural sources of folic include broccoli, brussels sprouts, leafy green vegetables, including cabbage, kale, spring greens, and spinach, peas, chickpeas, and kidney beans, liver (BUT AVOID THIS DURING PREGNANCY), breakfast cereals, fortified with folic acid.

8. The liver, while rich with folic, should be avoided in pregnancy because it contains high levels of retinol, which is a type of vitamin A.

9. Too much or high levels of the retinol form of vitamin A can build up in the body and may be harmful to the unborn baby.
