Hygienelink, the medical equipment manufacturing arm of Phytomedika Asya Corporation, was founded February 2020, during the devastating Taal Volcano eruption. During those times, the spiking demand for disposable masks and respirators brought about rampant overpricing, hoarding, and profiteering. Despite its prices being excessively high, disposable masks were thrown mindlessly and people did not have sustainable options.
To address these problems, the innovator of Hygienelink, a young community pharmacist, conceptualized the idea of producing reusable masks made from fluid-repellent technical textiles to be a sustainable alternative to disposable masks or cotton ones that do not really mimic protection. Our considerations were to develop a fabric mask that is primarily low-cost, an outer layer that can repel body fluids, and an absorbent hypoallergenic inner layer. The initial prototypes underwent tedious research and development to improve the materials and the mass production process โ making sure it can be produced at the lowest cost possible. These product development efforts were hindered with lack of funding. Come March 2020, the Philippines saw its first cases of CoVID-19 infection. Prices of protective gears have skyrocketed; panic buying and hoarding reached its worst. As a painful result, those that needed protective masks did not have anything to use.
A fluid-repellent sustainable alternative is now more relevant than ever. With the help of family and friends, the innovator was able to generate fund to fuel the production cost. The first informal public launch of the Hygienelink Fluid-repellent Mask was March 4, 2020, through a simple Facebook post. In a matter of days, the post reached 13 thousand likes and 12,000 shares on social media. Our first customer was a medical technologist from a public hospital in Manila. Retelling her story, she was forced to used face towels to protect herself while on duty. From then on, Hygienelinkโs customers grew, each with their own heartbreaking pandemic story to tell. Hearing each one of them, we realized our greater purpose. With every userโs feedback, we rethought and improved our design. The only thing that did not change was its price - it was sold for a mere Php 45.00 each and sold for the same price to this day.
We are both humbled and honored that a single idea gave fruit to a multitude of opportunities. Hygienelink was able to expand its production line and had enough to give back to its stakeholders โ our customers, our hardworking employees, and the Filipino community.
