How Accessible is Rural Healthcare in the Philippines?
Public health remains deeply unequal in the Philippines with lack of access in rural areas rather than urban areas. While Metro Manila and other urban centers host world-class hospitals and specialists, remote regions often rely on under-resourced rural health units (RHUs) and barangay health stations (BHSs).
According to the Department of Health (DOH), around 40% of Filipinos live in rural areas, but only about 10% of healthcare providers serve these communities. Challenges create barriers not just for emergency services but also for preventive care and regular check-ups. Thus, resulting in unequal access for rural residents.
