The World Health Organization has raised the alarm following a reported Nipah virus outbreak in Indiaโ€™s West Bengal state, prompting heightened concern across parts of Asia.

๐—ง๐˜„๐—ผ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ in West Bengal since December 2025, reportedly involving healthcare workers. Indian health authorities say nearly 200 close contacts have been traced and tested negative, as regional vigilance remains high.

In response, countries around the world have tightened screening measures at airports and border entry points, including Thailand and Nepal.

Nipah virus infection can range from ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜†๐—บ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ and fatal encephalitis, with a case fatality rate of 40% to 75% depending on outbreak response and clinical capacity.

Transmitted from animals, contaminated food, or human-to-human contact, the virus is naturally hosted by fruit bats, and with ๐—ป๐—ผ ๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, the World Health Organization has classified it as a priority disease for urgent research.

In a January 28th statement, Department of Health spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo said the Nipah virus was previously detected in Sultan Kudarat in 2014, where 17 cases were recorded.

Domingo emphasized that the DOH remains prepared to address Nipah virus and other emerging diseases, noting that such health threats are not new to the department.

Earlier, in June 2025, the Department of Health (DOH) sounded the alarm as the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing HIV hotspot in the Asia-Pacific region. This warning has been echoed by major global health organizations such as the CDC, UNAIDS, and the World Health Organization.

According to the WHO, an average of 57 Filipinos are diagnosed with HIV every day in 2025. New infections have surged dramatically with rising 550% from 4,400 cases in 2010 to 29,600 in 2024 alone.

By 2025, an estimated 252,800 Filipinos were reported to be living with the disease.

WHO states that HIV symptoms differ on the stage of infection.
Transmission is most likely during the first few months after exposure, yet many people remain unaware of their status until much later. In the initial weeks, some individuals may show no symptoms at all, while others may experience flu-like signs.

As the infection advances, the virus steadily weakens the immune system, leading to additional symptoms, including swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, fever, diarrhea, and persistent cough.
Without treatment, the disease can progress to severe and life-threatening illnesses. These may include tuberculosis, cryptococcal meningitis, serious bacterial infections, and certain cancers such as lymphomas and Kaposiโ€™s sarcoma.
